Chapter 3 - The Traps Are Set

I didn't cry. I didn't yell.

I slowly pulled a sleek leather portfolio out of my briefcase and placed it squarely on Dr. Sterling’s desk.

"Dr. Sterling," I began calmly, "I am deeply sorry that my mother and sister have wasted your valuable time. But since they have brought formal allegations to this institution, I believe it is only right that we review the actual police report from that evening."

I opened the folder and pulled out an official document bearing the official seal of the Phoenix Police Department, accompanied by a USB drive.

"This is the certified incident report filed by Officer Miller," I stated, reading directly from the text. "'Officers responded to a non-emergency call made by Beverly Vance. Upon arrival, officers found a five-year-old child terrified by adults misusing emergency services. No evidence of child distress or maternal neglect was found. Caller was issued a stern warning regarding the fraudulent misuse of 911.'"

Dr. Sterling’s eyes widened as she read the police report.

"Furthermore," I continued, sliding the USB drive across the table, "this drive contains the full audio recording captured by my living room security system from that morning. It features my mother shouting at a crying five-year-old, demanding that police 'lock her up' over a doll, while my sister coaches her daughter to lie."

Beverly’s handkerchief dropped from her trembling fingers. Her face lost every ounce of its color.

"Maya!" Beverly stammered, her voice cracking. "That... that was an internal family matter! You recorded us in your own house?!"

"I have security cameras in my common areas, Beverly. You knew that," I said smoothly.

Then, I looked at Dr. Sterling. "Dr. Sterling, my daughter is thriving here. I pay her tuition six months in advance. But if this board chooses to listen to fabricated claims from two financially bankrupt individuals who are currently facing severe civil litigation, I will be happy to pull my endowment for the new arts wing."

Dr. Sterling stood up slowly, her posture stiffening with absolute coldness as she looked at Beverly and Joanna.

"Mrs. Vance," Dr. Sterling said, her voice dropping an octave. "You have attempted to use this institution to weaponize a fraudulent claim against a devoted mother and a cherished student. You have five seconds to leave my office before I call campus security and have you permanently trespassed from these grounds."

"Dr. Sterling, wait!" Joanna pleaded, panic flooding her voice. "You don't understand—"

"Security!" Dr. Sterling snapped into her intercom.

Beverly and Joanna scrambled out of the office like panicked rats, their high heels clicking frantically down the marble hallway.

Dr. Sterling turned to me, her expression softening into deep sympathy. "Mrs. Carter... I am so deeply sorry you have to deal with this. Maisie is safe here. Nothing will ever change that."

"Thank you, Dr. Sterling," I said, taking back my USB drive. "But the day isn't over yet. They received a notice in the mail this morning, and I suspect their real nightmare is just beginning."
