Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

While Naomi was in surgery, a different kind of war was breaking out across the city.

By 2:00 PM, news of the halted Apex Facilities acquisition had leaked to the financial press. The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg ran breaking headlines: HALCYON ENTERPRISES HALTS $80M ACQUISITION CITES SYSTEMIC LABOR VIOLATIONS.

Inside the high-rise offices of Apex Facilities, chaos reigned.

Harold Sterling and Marcus Vance sat in a emergency board meeting with their primary investors. Their stock was plunging in real time, down twenty-four percent since the morning opening bell.

"He’s destroying us!" Marcus screamed, slamming his fist onto the conference table. "Crane pulled the maintenance contract for Halcyon Tower, and now three other commercial property groups are threatening to terminate their agreements with us by the end of the week! All because of some sick custodial worker!"

"What did you do to that woman, Marcus?" Sterling demanded, his face purple with rage. "Crane’s legal team filed an affidavit alleging labor exploitation, safety violations, and illegal termination threats!"

"I did what you told me to do!" Marcus shouted back. "I kept overhead down! I delivered a thirty percent profit margin on facility management! You praised me for it at the quarterly review!"

"Well, it's over now," Sterling spat. "Crane isn't just auditing us. He’s funding a class-action lawsuit on behalf of every contracted worker Apex has hired in the last three years. He brought in the state attorney general's office!"

Marcus’s eyes turned dark and feral. "He thinks he can destroy my career over a homeless cleaner? Let's see how noble Elliot Crane looks when the press finds out he’s using corporate assets to hide a female employee in a private hospital suite."

Marcus stood up, grabbing his coat and phone.

"Where are you going?" Sterling yelled.

"To St. Jude Hospital," Marcus snarled. "I have a press team following me. Let's see how Mr. High-and-Mighty CEO handles a microphone in his face when I accuse him of improper conduct with his staff."

Meanwhile, on the sixth floor of St. Jude, the red light above Operating Room 4 turned green.

Dr. Arthur Vance stepped out into the surgical waiting room, pulling off his mask and blue surgical cap. His face was tired, but his eyes were bright with triumph.

Elliot stood up immediately from the couch where he had been reading a storybook to Cleo.

"How is she, Arthur?"

"It was intense, Elliot," Arthur said, wiping his forehead with a towel. "The tissue damage was extensive—far worse than the initial scans showed. If she had gone another two weeks without intervention, she would have suffered catastrophic internal organ failure."

Elliot felt his knees go soft with relief. "But you got it?"

"We removed all the damaged tissue," Arthur smiled broadly. "Her vitals are strong. She’s in recovery right now, and she’s going to make a full, complete recovery. In six weeks, she’ll be healthier than she’s been in years."

Elliot let out a long, shuddering breath, turning to look at Cleo. "Did you hear that, Cleo? Mommy is completely fixed."

Cleo squealed with joy, jumping up and down on the waiting room carpet, hugging her plush bear.

Suddenly, the heavy double glass doors of the sixth-floor waiting wing burst open.

Marcus Vance marched into the corridor, flanked by two aggressive freelance news cameramen carrying shoulder-mounted cameras with bright halogen spotlights blazing.

"There he is!" Marcus pointed a thick finger at Elliot, his voice echoing loudly off the quiet hospital walls. "The great Elliot Crane! The champion of the working class!"

A nurse stepped forward, alarmed. "Sir! This is a restricted surgical recovery unit! You cannot have cameras in here!"

"Get out of my way!" Marcus pushed past her, stepping right into Elliot’s space, while the bright halogen light blinded the room. "Tell the cameras, Crane! Tell them why you tanked an eighty-million-dollar deal! Tell them how much company money you spent to put your personal favorite cleaning girl into a VIP hospital suite!"

Cleo screamed in terror at the sudden noise and blinding lights, diving behind Elliot’s legs, wrapping her tiny arms around his knee.

Elliot didn't flinch. He didn't step back.

He reached down, gently placed his hand over Cleo’s head, shielding her eyes from the glare, and looked into the camera lens with a cold, terrifying serenity that made the cameraman instinctively lower his rig half an inch.

"Are you finished, Marcus?" Elliot asked quietly.

"No, I'm not finished!" Marcus sneered, leaning in close. "You think you can play god with people's lives? You think you can ruin my reputation over a woman who isn't worth twelve dollars an hour?"

SNAP.

The sound of the hospital corridor doors swinging open again echoed through the hallway.

Four uniformed officers from the city police department, led by Frank Vance—Elliot’s head of security—stepped smoothly into the corridor.

"Marcus Vance?" the lead officer asked.

Marcus blinked, turning around, startled. "What is this?"

"You are under arrest for felony witness tampering, extortion, and corporate fraud," the officer said, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "We have an arrest warrant issued thirty minutes ago by the District Attorney's office, based on wiretap evidence provided by Halcyon Corporate Security."

Marcus’s jaw dropped. "Wiretap? What wiretap?!"

Frank Vance stepped forward, a cold, satisfied grin on his face. "The breakroom in the sub-basement of Halcyon Tower, Marcus. It’s a company-owned facility. Every time you threatened a worker in that room over the last six months, you were being recorded on corporate audio feeds."

The officers grabbed Marcus’s arms, pulling them behind his back, and snapped the cuffs shut with two loud, final clicks.

"You can't do this to me!" Marcus screamed, his face turning bright red as he was dragged down the hallway toward the elevators, his boots dragging uselessly against the clean hospital tile. "I built that company! I ran those crews! Crane, you hear me?! You can't destroy me!"

Elliot watched him go without a single trace of emotion on his face.

He turned to the cameramen who were standing frozen in horror.

"If any footage of that little girl appears on the news tonight," Elliot said softly, "I will buy your media network by Monday morning and fire every person who worked on your broadcast. Do I make myself clear?"

The cameramen turned off their lights instantly, grabbed their gear, and bolted for the stairs.
