Chapter 5 - The Master Account

At eight o'clock the following morning, the sun rose over the quiet, manicured lawns of the Westchester estate.

Inside the formal dining room, the large mahogany table was set with fresh flowers, orange juice, hot coffee, and a spread of warm pastries from the local bakery.

Rosa stood near the doorway, holding her hands tightly together, looking nervous and deeply overwhelmed. Beside her sat Mia, wearing a clean pink sweater, staring wide-eyed at the delicious breakfast spread.

Julian walked into the room, wearing a simple blue shirt. Behind him came Evelyn Vance, his chief corporate legal counsel, carrying a leather briefcase.

"Good morning, Rosa. Good morning, Mia," Julian smiled warmly, pulling out two chairs at the head of the table. "Please, sit down."

"Mr. Mercer," Rosa said, her voice shaking slightly as she remained standing. "I heard what happened last night... on the news. They said Mr. Henderson and your brother were arrested."

"They were," Julian said gently. "And they will spend a very long time answering for what they did."

Evelyn Vance set her briefcase on the table, opened it, and pulled out two official legal envelopes along with a certified bank tablet.

"Rosa," Evelyn said kindly. "Mr. Mercer instructed our legal team to perform a complete, independent audit of every single hour you have worked for Mercer Estate Management over the last five years."

Rosa blinked. "Five years?"

"Yes," Evelyn nodded. "We discovered that Arthur Henderson had been subtly altering the overtime calculations for the entire domestic staff for over three years, long before the outright wage theft began ten weeks ago."

Evelyn slid the first envelope across the table. Inside was a certified cashier's check from Julian’s personal account.

Rosa picked up the check. Her eyes widened into enormous circles, her hands shaking violently as she stared at the written number:

$142,500.00

"Mr. Mercer..." Rosa gasped, dropping the check onto the table as if it were hot. "This... this is a mistake! My back pay for ten weeks is only fourteen thousand dollars!"

"The fourteen thousand is in there, Rosa," Julian said, leaning forward and resting his hands on the table. "The rest is the full reimbursement of your stolen overtime over five years, compounded with statutory interest, plus a full contractual bonus for the pain and distress you and Mia suffered over the last ten weeks."

Tears streamed down Rosa’s cheeks, pouring freely as she buried her face in her hands. Mia wrapped her little arms around her mother's waist, looking up at Julian with deep, innocent gratitude.

"And there is one more thing," Julian added, turning to Evelyn.

Evelyn pulled out a second legal document—a real estate deed transfer agreement.

"Rosa," Julian explained softly. "The estate management structure has been completely dissolved. From today forward, all domestic personnel will be hired as direct, salaried employees of Mercer Medical Logistics, complete with full corporate health insurance, four weeks of paid vacation, and a retirement match."

He slid the second document toward her.

"Furthermore, Mercer Medical Logistics owns a three-bedroom stone cottage on the northern border of this property," Julian continued. "It was previously used for visiting executive housing. As part of your permanent employment contract, that house is yours to live in, completely rent-free, for as long as you choose to work with us."

Rosa looked up, completely stunned, unable to process the incredible wave of generosity. "A... a house? For Mia and me?"

"No landlord will ever put a yellow paper on your door again, Rosa," Julian promised, a warm, genuine smile breaking across his face. "I give you my word."

Mia looked from her mother to Julian, a bright, radiant smile sweeping across her small face.

"Thank you, Mr. Mercer," Mia said softly.

Julian looked down at the brave little girl who had walked up to him in the west corridor forty-eight hours ago.

"No, Mia," Julian said gently, shaking her small hand. "Thank you for asking the right question."
