Chapter 2 - The Severed Cord

Dr. Reynolds squeezed my hand, her voice cracking as she spoke the words that shattered what was left of my heart.

"I am so incredibly sorry, Emily," she whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek. "The trauma to your abdomen... the internal bleeding was too severe. We couldn't save the baby. And because of the delay in getting you to the operating room, you suffered massive hemorrhaging. We had to perform an emergency hysterectomy to save your life."

The room tilted.

The sterile white walls of the intensive care unit felt like they were collapsing inward. I couldn't breathe. My baby was gone. My ability to ever carry a child again—vandalized, stolen from me by a sister's jealousy and a family’s grotesque cover-up.

"Nathan..." I gasped, the physical pain in my body completely swallowed by an ocean of agonizing grief. "They took Nathan. They're blaming him."

"I know, Emily," Dr. Reynolds said, her expression hardening. "The police wanted to arrest him the moment he carried you in, but I refused to let them near him until he was processed. He’s currently being held at the precinct down the street. Your parents and sister have already signed formal affidavits accusing him of domestic terrorism and aggravated assault."

"They stole his phone," I whispered, my mind suddenly clearing through the fog of medication and grief. The cold, analytical brain of a corporate litigator—the part of me that had dismantled corrupt CEOs and fraudulent empires—began to claw its way back to the surface. "They blocked the doors. They left me to die."

I looked down at my hospital gown, then at the IV lines in my arm.

"Dr. Reynolds, I need my phone. It was in my coat pocket when Nathan brought me here."

"The police tried to seize it as evidence, claiming your family requested it," Dr. Reynolds said, reaching into her medical cabinet and pulling out a sealed plastic bag. "But I locked it in my private office first. I told them it was contaminated with biohazard material."

I took the bag with trembling hands. I ripped it open and powered on the screen.

The audio file was there.

A seventy-two-minute recording.

It captured the entire afternoon—from the moment I announced my pregnancy, to Megan’s chilling whisper: “I bet I could make everything quiet if I really wanted to,” to the sickening, heavy thud of her boot striking my stomach, to my father refusing to let Nathan call 911 while I bled out on the rug.

"They wanted to play a game of narratives," I whispered, looking up at Dr. Reynolds with eyes that had turned entirely to ice. "Let's show them what happens when they play with a master of the court."
