Chapter 4 - The Defense Collapses

Two days after the raid, the preliminary arraignment hearing took place at the county courthouse. The small courtroom was packed with local reporters drawn by the sensational nature of the case: a wealthy matriarch accused of cyber-spying on her own six-year-old granddaughter using a bugged teddy bear.

Margaret sat at the defense table flanked by two high-priced attorneys from the city’s premier criminal defense firm. She looked older, her face drawn, her eyes darting nervously toward the gallery where Daniel and Claire sat quietly in the second row, holding hands.

Judge Evelyn Vance, a stern magistrate known for her zero-tolerance stance on privacy violations and crimes against minors, sat behind the mahogany bench with a towering stack of forensic reports.

"The court has reviewed the initial evidentiary disclosures provided by the state cybercrimes division," Judge Vance announced, her voice echoing sharply through the quiet courtroom. "The forensic extraction from the seized computing hardware at the defendants' residence reveals active, persistent remote access logs connected directly to an audio-visual recording device deployed inside a children's toy sent to the minor victim."

Margaret’s lead attorney stood up smoothly, adjusting his tie. "Your Honor, we move for dismissal based on insufficient direct physical linkage tying our client personally to the active operation of the software interface. While Mrs. Sterling purchased the item, third-party software installations can often be—"

"Counsel," Judge Vance interrupted sharply, her gaze fixed coldly on the defense table. "The state has recovered video files stamped with timestamps matching household events in the victims' home, alongside cloud-storage credentials registered directly under Margaret Sterling’s personal biometric login and credit card history. Furthermore, encrypted chat logs retrieved from her private Telegram account explicitly discuss the deployment of the device to 'monitor household compliance.' "

Margaret flinched. The color drained completely from her cheeks. She turned her head slightly to look back at her son, her lips parting as if to plead for mercy, but Daniel’s expression was an impenetrable wall of ice.

"Given the severity of the charges—including felony wiretapping, conspiracy, and statutory violations concerning the privacy of a minor—this court finds probable cause on all counts," Judge Vance ruled firmly, banging her gavel. "Bail is denied given the high risk of witness tampering and evidence obstruction. The defendant will be remanded to custody pending trial."

A sharp gasp escaped Margaret’s lips as a court bailiff stepped forward, placing handcuffs back around her wrists. As she was led away through the side doors, she looked directly at Claire, her eyes flashing with a mix of desperate fury and utter disbelief that her world had actually collapsed.

Claire did not flinch. She simply squeezed Daniel’s hand, feeling the final, heavy weight of the past lift off their shoulders.
