Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup
By 1:30 PM, the news of the courtroom revelation had sent shockwaves through the financial sector. Shares of Hollis Transit Systems plummeted by 42% in a matter of two hours.
When court reconvened at 2:00 PM, Courtroom Four was overflowing with emergency legal representatives, news reporters, and members of the company’s board of directors who had rushed to the courthouse in a state of sheer panic.
Judge Calder took his seat, looking over his glasses at the defense table. Adrian looked hollowed out. His hair was messy, his tie loosened, and his three attorneys were frantically reading through a massive stack of patent law precedents.
"Mr. Crane," Judge Calder began. "Have you reviewed the documents provided by Mrs. Lane?"
Crane stood up slowly, adjusting his glasses with a trembling hand. "Your Honor... we... we acknowledge the authenticity of the initial filings. However, my client contends that through twelve years of operational management, he has established equitable ownership of the intellectual property—"
"Save it for a civil trial, Mr. Crane," Judge Calder interrupted sharply. "This court is here today to determine temporary custody, spousal support, and the freezing of marital assets pending trial. And based on the certified documents before me, it appears that Mr. Hollis has systematically misrepresented his financial status to this court."
Judge Calder pulled a second set of documents from my file.
"Furthermore," the judge continued, "Mrs. Lane’s legal counsel has submitted evidence showing that over the last eighteen months, Mr. Hollis transferred approximately fourteen million dollars from joint accounts into offshore shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands—funds that were hidden from the court during pre-trial financial disclosures."
Paige gasped, staring at Adrian in disbelief. "Fourteen million? Adrian, you said those accounts were for company acquisitions!"
"Quiet!" Adrian hissed at her, but the damage was already done.
"Mr. Hollis," Judge Calder said, his eyes burning with anger. "Hiding assets during a judicial proceeding is a severe violation of the law. Effective immediately, I am issuing a full temporary restraining order on all personal and corporate bank accounts under your name."
Adrian slammed his hands on the table. "Your Honor, you can't freeze corporate accounts! I have payroll to meet on Friday! I have vendor contracts!"
"Then I suggest you ask the majority shareholder for a loan," Judge Calder replied coldly, looking directly at me.
"As for the matter of emergency custody," Judge Calder continued, his tone softening as he looked toward Samuel and Owen, who sat quietly beside Marcus. "It is clear to this court that Mrs. Lane has provided a stable, nurturing environment for her sons, while Mr. Hollis has attempted to use financial coercion and false narratives to alienate the children from their mother."
The judge brought his gavel down with a resounding boom.
"Emergency primary physical and legal custody of Samuel and Owen Hollis is awarded exclusively to Mrs. Evelyn Lane. Mr. Hollis is granted supervised visitation once a week, pending a full psychological evaluation and a complete audit of his financial activities."
"No!" Adrian shouted, half-rising from his chair. "You can't do this! They're my sons!"
"One more outburst, Mr. Hollis, and I will have you held in contempt and placed in a holding cell for the weekend," Judge Calder warned.
Beside me, Samuel and Owen let out a collective sigh of relief, leaning tightly into my sides. I wrapped my arms around them, holding them close as tears of relief finally streamed down my cheeks.
As the judge exited the bench, Marcus leaned down and whispered into my ear. "That was just step one, Evelyn. The emergency board meeting is scheduled for four o'clock today at corporate headquarters. Are you ready to finish this?"

"I've been ready for twelve years," I said.
