Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage Cracks

By noon the following day, the snow had stopped falling, leaving Westchester County buried under two feet of sparkling white ice.

Inside the Harrington mansion, the air was thick with tension.

Grant sat at the long mahogany dining table, surrounded by three of New York’s most expensive corporate defense attorneys. Victoria paced back and forth behind him, her mink coat replaced by a dark wool suit, her diamond-ringed hands twitching nervously.

"This is ridiculous!" Victoria fumed, slamming her hand down on the sideboard. "A military convoy? On our private drive? I want those trespassers arrested! I want to call the Governor!"

"Mother, sit down!" Grant snapped, pulling at his collar. He hadn't slept a wink. His eyes were bloodshot, and his hands shook as he poured cream into his black coffee. "Arthur, tell me what is happening. Can they actually freeze our accounts?"

Arthur Pendelton, the senior partner of Pendelton & Croft—a legal firm that had represented the Harrington family for forty years—adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses. He looked deeply uncomfortable.

"Grant... Victoria... we have a catastrophic situation," Pendelton said softly, flipping through a stack of legal notices that had been delivered by a federal courier two hours earlier. "This isn't a civil police matter. This is a Federal Jurisdiction Override."

"What does that mean in English?" Victoria demanded.

"It means," Pendelton explained, "that Evelyn Vance—or rather, Colonel Evelyn Vale—is an active high-ranking military officer protected by the Service-members Civil Relief Act and several classified national security statutes. When you removed her from this house last night, you didn't just throw out a spouse. You committed an act that the Department of Defense is interpreting as a hostile act against a active commander."

Grant scoffed, trying to maintain his arrogant posture. "Come on, Arthur! She's an interior designer! I saw her fabric samples! I paid for her drafting software!"

"That was her official operational cover, Grant!" Pendelton shouted, losing his patience. "Do you have any idea who she is? I ran a deep check through our federal contacts an hour ago. Evelyn Vale is a legend in Joint Operations! Her clearance level is higher than the Secretary of the Army! She doesn't need your money! Her personal trust fund—inherited from her late father, General Thomas Vale—is worth twice what Harrington Global holds in liquid capital!"

The room went dead silent.

Grant stared at his lawyer, his mouth hanging open. "Her father was a General?"

"General Thomas Vale," Pendelton confirmed, shaking his head in disbelief. "The man who built Vale Defense Systems before donating his entire portfolio to a blind trust for his daughter. Evelyn never used a dime of your money, Grant. She let you pay for dinner because she was playing the role of a modest civilian wife!"

Victoria’s face drained of color. She gripped the back of a chair to steady herself. "Two... twice our liquid capital?"

"Yes!" Pendelton spat. "And it gets worse. Much worse."

Pendelton pulled a red-stamped folder from his briefcase and laid it on the table.

"At 0800 hours this morning, the Department of Defense issued an emergency suspension of Harrington Global’s security clearance," Pendelton revealed, his voice trembling. "The twelve-billion-dollar defense logistics contract you’ve been banking on for the last two years? The board has frozen the evaluation process pending an investigation into 'moral turpitude and national security vulnerabilities' within your executive leadership."

Grant bolted out of his chair, knocking his coffee cup over. The black liquid pooled across the antique mahogany table.

"They can't do that!" Grant screamed. "That contract is sixty percent of our projected revenue for the next decade! If we lose that contract, the board will vote me out by Friday! The stock will collapse!"

"It's already collapsing," Pendelton said grimly, turning his laptop screen toward Grant. "News of the federal hold leaked to the Wall Street wire twenty minutes ago. Harrington Global shares are down thirty-four percent in pre-market trading."

"Fix it!" Victoria shrieked, clutching her throat. "Fix it, Arthur! Call her! Offer her money! Give her whatever she wants!"

"She doesn't want your money, Victoria," Pendelton said quietly. "She doesn't need it. And right now... she isn't answering calls from civilian attorneys."

Suddenly, the front door of the mansion echoed with a loud, heavy knock.

Grant jumped. "Is that them again?"

Pendelton walked to the window and peeked through the drapes. Two black sedans bearing United States Treasury Department plates were parked in the driveway alongside two New York State Police vehicles.

Four agents in dark suits, accompanied by state troopers, were walking up the stone steps.

"Who is that?" Grant whispered, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead.

Pendelton turned back to Grant, his face pale as chalk.

"That's the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division," Pendelton said. "And they have a federal search warrant."
