Chapter 3 - The Counter-Attack

By Tuesday morning, the scandal had erupted across the Midwest.

The headlines on the Chicago Tribune and the Sun-Times were brutal: "U.S. ARMY COLONEL RESCUES PREGNANT DAUGHTER FROM SUBURBAN ABUSE HELL; PROMINENT FAMILY FACES FEDERAL CHARGES."

Inside the sleek, high-rise office of Vance & Partners in downtown Chicago, Linda Mitchell sat frantically dabbing her eyes with a silk handkerchief. Across the glass conference table sat her lead defense attorney, Marcus Vance—a ruthless corporate lawyer known for getting wealthy clients out of impossible legal jams.

Standing in the corner of the room was Ryan’s younger brother, Carter, who looked nervous, sweaty, and terrified.

"Marcus, you have to do something!" Linda wept hysterically, her expensive designer suit looking crumpled and unwashed. "They won't let me see Ryan! The federal marshals treated me like a common street criminal when I went to the jail this morning! They said my assets have been frozen under a temporary restraining order!"

Marcus Vance rubbed his temples, staring at the mountain of evidence files sitting in front of him.

"Linda, shut up for a second and listen to me," Vance snapped, dropping his polite facade. "You didn't tell me your daughter-in-law was the only child of Colonel James Bennett, Commander of the 177th Infantry Brigade!"

"What difference does her father make?!" Linda shrieked. "He’s just a government employee! Ryan is my son! He was just trying to discipline his wife! She was hysterical!"

"Discipline?!" Vance barked, slamming his hand onto the table. "Linda, your son broke three of her ribs! He left fingerprint marks on her abdomen! And to make matters ten times worse, CID pulled three hundred text messages from your personal phone where you instructed him on how to evade police detection!"

Carter stepped forward, his voice shaking. "Mr. Vance... can we fight this in court? Can we claim Emily was mentally unstable due to the pregnancy?"

"Are you insane?" Vance yelled, glaring at Carter. "Colonel Bennett didn't just hire a local attorney. He brought in the Chief of Military Justice for the Midwest Region, supported by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office! They aren't just looking to put Ryan in prison; they are filing civil racketeering and torture claims against your family’s real estate business!"

Before Linda could answer, the heavy double doors of the conference room swung open.

Two federal agents in trench coats walked inside, followed by Colonel Bennett and his lead military legal counsel, Major David Miller.

Dad walked into the room with unyielding authority, his hands folded behind his back, his dark eyes scanning the opulent office as if it were an enemy outpost waiting to be demolished.

"Colonel Bennett!" Vance said, standing up quickly and trying to smooth his tie. "This is a private legal consultation! You can't just walk into my firm!"

"I can when I carry a federal search warrant for your client's financial records, Mr. Vance," Major Miller announced, tossing a stamped court order onto the center of the glass table.

Linda shrank back into her chair, her face turning pale as she stared at my father. "James... please... we can work this out! We can settle this privately! How much money do you want? I’ll give Emily half of our company stock! Just tell the prosecutors to drop the federal charges against my boy!"

My father walked slowly up to the table, leaning over until his face was six inches from Linda’s.

"You think my daughter’s blood has a price tag, Linda?" Dad whispered, his voice so cold it made the air in the room freeze. "You sat in that apartment for seven months. You heard her crying. You saw the marks on her body. And instead of helping her, you brought her a bowl of cold soup and told her she was lucky you put up with her."

"I... I was just trying to keep my family together!" Linda sobbed.

"Your family is finished," Dad declared flatly. "As of eight o'clock this morning, the Department of Justice has seized your real estate firm's assets under the Asset Forfeiture Act for laundering money through fraudulent lease agreements. Your son Ryan is facing twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. And you, Linda..."

Dad pulled a fresh set of paper documents from Major Miller’s briefcase and slid them across the table toward her.

"What is this?" she whimpered.

"That is an indictment for felony conspiracy to commit human deprivation under color of law," Major Miller explained. "The federal agents standing behind you are taking you into custody right now."

The two federal agents stepped forward, pulling Linda out of her leather chair and pulling her arms behind her back as the heavy steel cuffs snapped shut around her wrists.

"Ryan! Ryan! Help me!" Linda screamed, her composure completely collapsing as she was dragged toward the door. "Marcus! Do something!"

Marcus Vance took two steps back, raising his hands in absolute surrender. "I’m withdrawing as your counsel, Linda. Good luck."

Dad watched her get dragged down the hallway, her pathetic shrieks echoing off the marble walls of the high-rise building. He didn't smile. He didn't celebrate. He simply adjusted his cover, turned to Major Miller, and said four words:

"Now... let's finish Ryan."
