Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Four weeks later.

The Fairfield County Superior Courthouse in Stamford, Connecticut, was a modern structure of glass, gray granite, and hard marble floors.

On a bright, frosty Tuesday morning, the gallery of Courtroom 3B was packed with local journalists, family acquaintances, and curious onlookers. The scandal had ripped through the wealthy enclaves of Greenwich like a wildfire, shattering the pristine image of the Brooks family line.

Sitting at the prosecution table were Natalie, Mark, and Victoria Vance, alongside Assistant District Attorney Thomas Miller.

Across the aisle sat Evan, Paige, and Lorraine, flanked by three separate criminal defense attorneys.

Evan looked like a shell of the man he had been six months ago. After MedTech Solutions completed their internal forensic audit, they discovered that Evan had embezzled an additional $42,000 from company travel accounts to fund private weekend getaways with Paige in Nantucket and Montauk. He had been summarily terminated, his corporate health insurance revoked, and his professional license placed under review.

Paige sat beside her lawyer, her head hanging low. Apex Wellness LLC had been formally dissolved by court order, its commercial lease terminated, and all personal equipment purchased with stolen funds seized by county marshals for public auction.

Lorraine sat rigidly at the far end of the table, her hands clutching her leather handbag, her former social standing completely eradicated. Her country club membership had been quietly revoked, her committee seats stripped, and her high-society friends had stopped answering her phone calls weeks ago.

Judge Marcus Reyes presided over the preliminary hearing. He adjusted his glasses, looking down from the bench at the defense team with cold, piercing authority.

"In my twenty-five years on the bench," Judge Reyes began, his voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls, "I have rarely witnessed such a comprehensive, calculated display of familial betrayal and financial predation. Mr. Evan Brooks, you took advantage of your marital position to systematically plunder an inheritance trust, utilizing corporate mechanisms to disguise the theft."

Evan’s defense attorney stood up quickly. "Your Honor, my client has express desire to make full financial restitution—"

"Restitution is a statutory requirement, counselor, not a bargaining chip," Judge Reyes cut him off sharply. "Furthermore, Mrs. Lorraine Brooks, your active participation as a secondary guarantor on filings tied to converted assets demonstrates clear criminal intent and conspiracy."

Judge Reyes slammed his gavel down onto the wooden block.

"The court finds probable cause on all counts. Bail for Evan Brooks is set at $250,000. Bail for Paige Miller Brooks is set at $100,000. Bail for Lorraine Brooks is set at $100,000. All defendants will surrender their passports immediately."

As the court officers stepped forward to place handcuffs on Evan and Paige, Lorraine let out a sharp, ragged gasp, dropping her head onto the defense table as the metallic clicks echoed through the courtroom.

Mark stood up from the prosecution table, taking a long, deep breath. He didn't look back at his mother or his brother as the officers led them away toward the holding cells.

He turned to Natalie, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips for the first time in months.

"It's over, Nat," Mark said softly.

"It's over, Mark," Natalie agreed, her heart feeling lighter than it had in seven years. "Now we take our lives back."
