Chapter 3 - The Claws in the Velvet

By 10:00 AM the following morning, Richard Vance was sitting on the back patio of his rented Long Island house, wearing sunglasses and sipping a mimosa.

Vanessa sat on the lounge chair beside him, her phone buzzing incessantly with notification pings.

"We hit half a million views, babe!" Vanessa squealed, kicking her manicured feet in the air. "The comments are brutal! Everyone is saying she looked like a drowned rat! Some meme page called her 'The Buttercream Casualty!'"

Richard chuckled, though his head throbbed from the scotch he’d consumed after the guests left. "She'll be back by dinner. Where else is she going to go? Her little friend Chloe lives in a shoe box. She has no money, no credit, no job. Once Lily starts crying for her toys, Maya will come crawling back on her knees, begging for forgiveness."

Olivia Vance stepped out onto the patio, holding a silver tray with fresh croissants. "She ruined the whole afternoon," Olivia huffed, setting the tray down with a heavy clatter. "All that fuss over a little joke. When your father was alive, he put me in my place plenty of times and I never made a scene in front of the neighbors. She’s ungrateful, Richard. You should make her clean the entire backyard before you let her back through that front door."

"Don't worry, Mom," Richard said, taking a bite of a croissant. "I'm going to make her sell that stupid silver necklace she’s always hiding under her shirt. I bet we can get five hundred bucks for it at the pawn shop."

Before Olivia could reply, the heavy iron gate at the front of the driveway rattled violently.

A sleek black Maybach pulled up to the curb, followed immediately by two heavy silver SUVs with tinted windows.

Richard sat up, his sunglasses sliding down his nose. "Is that... is that Julian Sterling’s detail?"

Vanessa gasped, quickly tossing her phone into her tote bag and smoothing her dress. "Oh my god! Did he watch my video? Is he coming to sign the investment agreement?!"

Richard stood up, straightening the collar of his polo shirt, his chest swelling with sudden, arrogant triumph. "I told you, Mom! The party worked! He saw how I handle my household! Real men respect real authority!"

Richard marched down the stone pathway toward the driveway, opening the gate with a wide, theatrical flourish.

"Mr. Sterling!" Richard called out, putting on his best country-club smile. "What an honor! I didn't expect you to stop by personally on a Sunday! Please, come inside! My mother just pulled fresh pastry from the—"

The rear door of the Maybach opened.

A man in a dark charcoal suit stepped out first. It was Thomas, Julian Sterling’s chief of security. He didn't offer a handshake. He stepped aside, holding the door open with quiet, rigid precision.

A woman stepped out onto the gravel driveway.

She wore a tailored white wool trousers suit that fit her like armor. Her dark hair was swept up into an elegant, flawless chignon. Her skin was spotless, radiant, and completely free of pink frosting. On her left wrist glinted a platinum watch worth more than Richard’s entire house, and around her neck hung a delicate silver chain with an orchid pendant sitting against her throat.

Beside her, holding her hand, was little Lily, wearing a brand-new yellow silk dress and handmade leather shoes.

Richard froze halfway down the path. His mouth opened, but his brain refused to process the image in front of him.

"Maya?" Richard stammered, his voice pitching an octave higher. "What... what the hell is this? Where did you rent those clothes? Who paid for that car?!"

Olivia and Vanessa hurried down the stone path behind him, stopping dead in their tracks as they saw the woman standing by the Maybach.

Maya walked forward slowly, her heels clicking against the stone with a rhythmic, terrifying precision. She stopped three feet from Richard, her dark eyes looking down at him as if he were a smudge of dirt on a clean floor.

"You're standing on my driveway, Richard," Maya said quietly.

Richard let out a nervous, hysterical laugh, looking back at his mother. "Your driveway?! Maya, have you completely lost your mind?! I rent this house! The lease is in my name!"

Thomas stepped forward, pulling a blue leather folder from his jacket and handing it directly to Richard.

"Correction, Mr. Vance," Thomas said in a crisp, dry tone. "You were leasing this house from Long Island Estates LLC. As of 8:00 AM this morning, Sterling-Vance Global acquired the LLC, its holdings, and its underlying debt. Mrs. Maya Sterling-Vance is now your landlord."

Richard stared at the blue folder in his hands, his fingers trembling as he flipped through the legal notices inside.

"Sterling-Vance?" Vanessa whispered behind him, her voice trembling. "Richard... what is he talking about?"

Maya stepped closer to Richard, her voice dropping into a low, icy whisper that only he could hear.

"You told me yesterday that I was a dime-a-dozen waitress," Maya said softly. "You told forty-seven people that I had no house, no car, and no family."

May you like

She reached out and picked a tiny piece of lint off his collar.

"You have two hours to pack your trash and get off my property, Richard," Maya said. "And if I find a single one of my daughter's toys missing... I won't just evict you. I'll execute the Queen’s County debt warrants before noon."
