Chapter 5 - The Birth in Geneva

Two months later.

Snow fell gently over the mountains of Geneva, blanketing the private estate of the Vance-Atherton family in a thick, silent layer of white.

Inside the private wing of the Clinique de Grangettes, the air was warm, filled with the scent of fresh lilies and the rhythmic monitoring beep of a heart rate machine.

Claire lay in the large, comfortable hospital bed, holding a tiny, swaddled bundle against her chest.

The baby had soft dark hair and bright, alert eyes that looked around the sunlit room with quiet wonder.

Arthur Vance sat in his wheelchair beside the bed, holding a small silver rattle engraved with the falcon crest. The old man's eyes were filled with soft tears as he watched his great-grandson sleep.

"He has Eleanor's nose," Arthur whispered, his raspy voice full of emotion. "And your strength, Claire."

Claire smiled, leaning her head back against the pillows, her fingers gently stroking her baby's soft cheek. "He's perfect, Grandfather."

Sterling stepped quietly into the room, holding a leather folder. He bowed his head respectfully.

"Excuse me, Miss Vance," Sterling said softly. "The final legal decrees from New York have been finalized."

Claire looked up. "Grant signed them?"

"Yes," Sterling confirmed, handing her a page. "Mr. Carter signed the full custody agreement, the surrender of all Carter Meridian equity, and the final divorce decree yesterday afternoon. He has officially vacated the Manhattan penthouse."

"Where is he now?" Claire asked, her tone entirely devoid of malice, carrying only the quiet indifference of someone who had long since moved on.

"Our investigators report he has taken a mid-level manager position at a regional trucking firm in Pennsylvania," Sterling replied. "He lives in a small rented apartment outside Philadelphia. He has declined all media interviews."

Claire looked down at her sleeping son.

In the end, she hadn't destroyed Grant out of hatred. She had simply removed her presence, her talent, and her family's backing from his life, leaving him with only what he had truly earned on his own—which, as it turned out, was very little.

"Thank you, Sterling," Claire said softly. "You can close the file."

"Understood, Miss Vance," Sterling bowed, turning and stepping out of the peaceful room.
