Chapter 3 - The Web Unravels

"Bailiff," Judge Reyes said, her voice ringing out like an executioner's sword. "Secure the doors. No one leaves this courtroom."

The armed bailiff immediately stepped in front of the oak doors at the back of the room, resting his hand over his sidearm. Two other court officers moved down the side aisles, positioning themselves behind Derek and Richard Vance.

"Your Honor, please!" Vance pleaded, spreading his hands in desperation. "My client has a right to due process! This evidence is unverified! We don't know who created those files!"

"The metadata on these files is timestamped, geotagged, and digitally signed by Mr. Hollis's personal IP address," Judge Reyes said, her eyes flashing behind her gold frames. "I have sat on this bench for fourteen years, Mr. Vance. I have seen bitter divorces. I have seen angry parents lie. But I have rarely seen a display of calculated, malicious cruelty quite like this."

She turned her gaze onto Derek, who was trembling so hard his hands were shaking inside his pockets.

"Mr. Hollis," she said. "You used illegal surveillance to spy on your wife. You deliberately drained her bank accounts to manufacture a false narrative of financial instability. You paid off a medical professional to draft a fraudulent psychological report. And you did all of this while attempting to strip a mother of her child."

"I did it for us!" Derek suddenly shouted, turning around to scream at Sienna. "You told me we needed to clean the accounts! You said she’d take half of everything!"

Sienna stood up, her face twisted in rage and terror. "Don't you dare put this on me, Derek! You came to me! You told me your marriage was over!"

"Silence!" Judge Reyes shouted, slamming her gavel down three times in rapid succession. "Sit down, Miss Cole! One more word from either of you and you will spend the night in the county jail!"

Sienna dropped back into her seat, bursting into frantic, quiet tears as she pulled her phone from her purse, her fingers flying across the screen as she desperately tried to text her own lawyer.

Judge Reyes took a deep breath, pulled off her glasses, and rubbed the bridge of her nose. When she put her glasses back on, her face was completely clear of emotion.

"Effective immediately," Judge Reyes ordered, "this court issues the following emergency rulings: First, Mr. Derek Hollis’s petition for full custody is denied with prejudice."

A heavy sob escaped my throat. I dropped my head into my hands, my shoulders shaking as months of unbearable terror, sleepless nights, and crushing isolation flooded out of me all at once. Callie’s small arm wrapped around my neck, her soft hair pressing against my cheek.

"Second," the judge continued, "Mrs. Nora Hollis is granted exclusive temporary legal and physical custody of Callie Hollis. Mr. Hollis will have zero contact with the minor child pending further investigation."

"Your Honor!" Derek cried out, taking a frantic step toward the bench. "She’s my daughter!"

"You surrendered your privilege to be called a father the moment you involved her in a criminal scheme to destroy her mother," Judge Reyes snapped. "Third, Mr. Hollis is ordered to vacate the marital home immediately and return all keys, access codes, and vehicles to Mrs. Hollis by 5:00 PM today."

"Fourth," she added, looking over at Sarah, "this court orders an immediate freeze on all bank accounts, investment portfolios, domestic and international shell companies registered under the names of Derek Hollis, Sienna Cole, or Apex Holdings LLC. A court-appointed forensic accountant will seize control of those assets by noon."

Sarah was scribbling furiously on her notepad, a fierce, triumphant smile spreading across her face. "Thank you, Your Honor. We also request emergency spousal and child support to be drawn directly from Mr. Hollis’s frozen firm equity."

"Granted," Judge Reyes said without hesitation. "Mr. Hollis will pay $6,500 per month in temporary support, retroactive to the date of his departure from the marital residence."

Derek looked as if he had been struck by lightning. His multi-million-dollar empire, his carefully curated reputation, his shiny new life with Sienna—it was all evaporating right before his eyes, reduced to ash by a ten-year-old girl holding a black plastic drive.

"Finally," Judge Reyes said, clicking a button on her intercom. "I am referring this entire file, along with the contents of this flash drive, directly to the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio and the State Prosecutor's office for immediate criminal evaluation regarding wire fraud, illegal wiretapping, obstruction of justice, and perjury."

The courtroom doors opened. Two state troopers stepped inside, summoned by the judge's clerk.

"Officers," Judge Reyes said, pointing toward Derek and his attorney. "Please escort Mr. Hollis and Mr. Vance to the holding area downstairs. They will remain there while the prosecutor's office reviews the digital evidence to determine formal arrest charges."

"Wait! No! You can't do this!" Derek screamed as the troopers grabbed his arms, pulling them behind his back. The smooth, refined businessman was completely gone; in his place was a cornered rat, kicking and shouting as he was dragged down the center aisle. "Nora! Tell them! Tell them it's a mistake! Nora!"

I didn't look at him.

I kept my eyes locked on my daughter, holding her close to my chest as her father's desperate screams echoed down the marble corridor outside, fading into silence as the heavy oak doors slammed shut.
