Chapter 7 - The Interruption

The waiting room had gone completely silent. Even the sick toddlers seemed to sense the crushing weight of the catastrophe unfolding near the reception desk.

Madison backed away until her spine hit the clinic’s vending machines. Her mascara was smeared, running in dark tracks down her cheeks, her chest heaving as she realized the game was irrevocably over.

“I had to!” Madison shrieked, the desperation finally boiling over into hysteria. “You were obsessed with having a baby, Daniel! You were miserable, you were talking about divorce every single day because Claire couldn't get pregnant, and I liked you! I wanted you! But you wouldn't look at me twice unless I could offer you what she couldn't!”

Daniel stared at her as if she were a total stranger. In many ways, she was.

“You lied to me,” Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “You told me it happened naturally. You let me divorce my wife, break up my home, and walk away from my entire life for a child that isn't even mine.”

“And you were so arrogant you believed every word of it!” Madison snapped back, her voice turning venomous with self-preservation. “You wanted a trophy, Daniel! You wanted proof that your bloodline was pure and invincible, and that Claire was the broken one! I just gave you what you wanted to hear!”

Daniel turned around slowly, the lab report clutched in his trembling fist.

He looked back toward the corner where Claire sat with her three children.

Noah and Eli were still sleeping peacefully in the double-wide stroller, completely oblivious to the war zone surrounding them. Grace rested her tiny head against Claire’s shoulder, breathing softly.

Daniel walked across the room, his steps heavy, mechanical, and defeated. He stopped three feet away from Claire’s chair, looking down at the woman he had discarded, the woman who had quietly, stubbornly achieved everything he had ever dreamed of without asking him for a single thing.

“Claire,” he choked out, his eyes swimming with unshed tears. “Claire, I... I am so sorry.”

Claire didn't smile. She didn't gloat. She simply looked at him with an expression far more devastating than anger: complete, absolute indifference.

“You wanted a family, Daniel,” Claire said softly, adjusting her coat over Grace. “You said my body couldn't give you one. But it turns out, the only thing broken in our marriage wasn't my biology. It was your judgment.”

Daniel dropped his head into his hands, a ragged, broken sound escaping his throat. He fell to his knees right there on the linoleum floor of the pediatric clinic, right beside the stroller holding his three biological children—the three children he had no legal right to, no claim over, and no part in creating beyond a microscopic contribution in a plastic cup three years prior.

He had traded a loyal, steadfast wife who loved him through every dark valley of infertility for a hollow lie and a fabricated miracle.

Behind him, Madison was frantically packing up her stroller, muttering curses under her breath as she bolted out the sliding glass doors into the pouring rain, leaving Daniel alone on the floor of the waiting room.

The pediatrician’s door clicked open.

“Claire Mercer?” the medical assistant called out warmly. “Dr. Henderson is ready for Noah, Eli, and Grace now.”

Claire stood up, her posture straight, her head held high. She locked the stroller wheels, settled her diaper bag over her shoulder, and pushed her three children down the hallway toward the examination rooms.

She didn't look back at Daniel once.
