Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

The front door, which Paige had left unlatched, slammed open with explosive force.

Graham stepped into the foyer.

He was breathing heavily, his jacket torn at the shoulder, his face flushed red with exertion and sweat. He carried a leather gym bag over one shoulder, his keys clutched tightly in his fist.

"Paige!" Graham gasped, ignoring me entirely as he sprinted into the kitchen. "The cops were at the coffee shop! They have a warrant! We have to leave right now—"

He froze when he saw me standing by the basement door.

The three of us stood in a silent triangle in the bright, sunlit kitchen—the husband who had kissed me goodbye, the sister who had offered me shelter, and the woman who had survived them both.

Graham’s eyes darted from me to Paige, then down to the iPad on the counter.

"She knows," Paige said, her voice trembling slightly for the first time. "Graham, she knows about the Nassau account. She knows about the valve."

Graham’s face went completely blank. The handsome, charming man I had loved for fourteen years vanished, replaced by a cold, desperate predator cornered in a trap.

He set the gym bag down on the floor and stepped toward me.

"Claire," he said, dropping his voice into that soft, soothing tone he used whenever I was upset. "Listen to me. You’re confused. You’ve been through a massive trauma—"

"Don't come near me," I said, my thumb resting over the emergency dial on my phone screen.

"Claire, give me the phone," Graham said, his speed accelerating as he lunged across the kitchen floor. "Give me the phone right now!"

Before he could reach me, the heavy glass patio doors behind the living room exploded inward in a shower of white safety crystals.

"STATE POLICE! DON'T MOVE! ON THE GROUND!"

Four tactical officers in black vests, weapons drawn, swarmed through the shattered patio doors, while three more breached the front entryway.

Captain Briggs was right behind them, his service weapon pointed directly at Graham’s chest.

"GET ON THE FLOOR, WESTON! NOW!"

Graham panicked. He turned to run toward the hallway, but a tactical officer caught him by the shoulders, driving him down onto the hardwood floor with a bone-crunching impact. His hands were yanked behind his back, the heavy steel handcuffs clicking shut within seconds.

Paige backed against the kitchen counter, her hands raised high in the air, screaming as two officers secured her wrists behind her back.

"Claire!" Graham yelled, his face pressed flat against the floor as he looked up at me with frantic, terrified eyes. "Claire, tell them! Tell them it was Paige's idea! She forced me into it! She threatened to tell you about us if I didn't help her!"

Paige whipped her head around, her eyes wide with unbelievable betrayal. "What?! You pathetic coward! You came up with the entire plan! You bought the valve tools!"

"SHUT UP! BOTH OF YOU!" Captain Briggs barked, kneeling beside Graham to read him his Miranda rights.

I didn't listen to their shouting. I didn't listen to the sirens wailing down the peaceful streets of Upper Arlington.

I turned around, unlocked the basement door, and walked down the stairs to my daughter.
