Chapter 5 - The Masterstroke

Over the next four weeks, I played the part of the grieving, helpless victim to absolute perfection.

I stayed in bed. I took the harmless vitamins Nurse Clara provided (after secretly swapping out any suspicious pills with sugar substitutes). I let Jared hold my hand while he pretended to mourn our lost future. I even allowed Courtney to visit and pitch her new media strategy, nodding listlessly at every insult disguised as advice.

Behind the scenes, Marcus and my legal team were moving like ghosts.

We didn't file for divorce. We didn't report the audio file to the police yet. If we moved too early, Jared’s powerful legal team and political connections would cover it up, burying the evidence in endless pretrial motions.

Instead, we let them walk straight into the trap.

Driven by the belief that I was completely broken and out of the picture, Jared accelerated the company’s annual shareholder gala—the night Harlan Media was set to announce its multi-billion-dollar merger with a European conglomerate, along with Courtney’s appointment as Vice President.

On the night of the gala, the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was packed with reporters, city officials, and industry titans. Courtney was radiant in an empire-waist gold gown, her pregnancy now subtly showing, standing proudly beside Jared as he addressed the crowd from the main stage.

"Tonight is not just a celebration of Harlan Media's unprecedented growth," Jared announced into the microphone, his voice booming with confidence. "It is a celebration of family. As many of you know, my beloved wife Shelby has been recovering from a sudden, tragic illness..."

He squeezed his eyes shut, putting on a masterful performance of a grieving husband.

"...Though we have faced unimaginable sorrow this year, the future of this company remains bright. Today, I am proud to announce—"

"You are proud to announce a fraud, Jared."

The crisp, clear voice echoed through the high-end sound system.

The crowd went dead silent. Jared froze, his smile locking into a mask of pure shock.

The grand double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

I walked down the central aisle. I wore a backless, emerald-green silk gown that showed off my posture, my dark hair styled in sharp, elegant waves. I walked with absolute power, completely unassisted, my eyes locked onto the stage. Beside me walked Marcus Vance and four uniformed officers from the State Police Major Crimes Division.

"Shelby?" Jared stammered, stepping away from the podium, his face draining of color. "What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be resting—"

"I'm done resting," I said, stepping onto the stage and taking the second microphone from the podium.

Courtney stepped forward, her face contorted in anger. "Security! Remove her! She’s mentally unstable from her surgery—"

"Which surgery, Courtney?" I asked, turning to face her with a calm, terrifying smile. "The surgical removal of my uterus based on fake cancer documents? Or the forced termination of my child via synthetic poison?"

Gasps erupted across the ballroom. Camera flashes began going off like strobe lights.

"You're insane!" Jared yelled, trying to grab my arm, but Marcus immediately stepped between us. "She’s grieving! She’s lost her mind!"

"I haven't lost my mind, Jared," I said softly, turning to the massive projection screen behind the stage—the screen intended to display the merger presentation. "I just brought the receipts."

Marcus pressed a button on his tablet.

The screen flickered. The audio recording began to play over the ballroom’s surround-sound speakers, loud, clear, and unmistakable:

"It mimics natural placental abruption... She’ll never know the prenatal vitamins you were giving her contained it..."

"My child needs to be the ONLY heir!"

"Fine. Do it. Make sure the surgeon writes up the cancer report."

The room devolved into utter chaos. Shareholders gasped, reporters shouted, and Courtney dropped her champagne glass, the crystal shattering across the stage floor. Jared stumbled backward, bumping into the podium, his eyes wide with horror as he looked at the crowd, then at the police officers ascending the stage.

"Jared Harlan, Courtney Briggs," the lead detective announced, pulling out two arrest warrants. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, illegal administration of hazardous substances, and healthcare fraud."

As the handcuffs clicked around Jared’s wrists, he looked at me, his lip trembling, his arrogant persona completely destroyed.

"Shelby... please..." he whispered, his voice cracking. "I loved you... I was forced into this..."

May you like

I leaned in close, my voice barely above a whisper, meant for his ears only.

"You took my child. You took my body," I said, my eyes cold and dead. "Now, I am taking your freedom, your company, and your name."
