Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Daniel Mercer

While my professional life soared, Daniel’s world began to crumble at a terrifying speed.
Without my half of the mortgage, his monthly expenses suddenly skyrocketed. Worse still, his corporate firm—a mid-sized logistics company—relied heavily on construction shipping contracts with Whitaker Construction.
On Wednesday afternoon, Daniel was called into his managing director’s office.
“Daniel,” his boss, Arthur Vance, said, tossing a formal memo onto the desk. “Thomas Whitaker’s office called us two hours ago. They’re terminating our logistics contract at the end of the month.”
Daniel felt his stomach drop. “What?! Why? We’ve handled their regional shipping for four years!”
Arthur looked at him with an expression of intense disgust. “Thomas didn't give a formal reason, Daniel. But his executive assistant made a passing remark about how the Whitaker family prefers doing business with firms that employ people of integrity. What the hell did you do at your father’s retirement party?”
Daniel went pale. “Arthur, that was a private family matter! It had nothing to do with work!”
“When you publicly humiliate the woman who saved the Whitaker children in front of half the town, Daniel, it becomes work!” Arthur slammed his hand on the desk. “That contract represents thirty percent of our regional revenue! Because of your big mouth and your fragile ego, our board is looking at staff cuts—starting with your department!”
Daniel stumbled out of the office, his head spinning, his heart pounding in his chest.
He drove straight to my new apartment near the lake, pulling up to the curb and running up the stairs to my door. He pounded on the wood until the hallway echoed with the noise.
“Rachel! Open the door! Rachel, please!”
I opened the door, keeping the security chain engaged. “Daniel, stop screaming. You’re going to disturb my neighbors.”
“You destroyed my job!” Daniel choked out, his eyes wild and bloodshot. “Thomas Whitaker canceled our shipping contracts! My boss is going to fire me! Did you tell Thomas to do that? Did you ask him to ruin my life?!”
I looked at him with quiet pity.
“I haven't asked Thomas to do anything, Daniel,” I said truthfully. “Thomas is a father whose children were saved by my work. He saw how you treated me, and he made a business decision based on your character. You did this to yourself.”
“Rachel, please,” Daniel sobbed, dropping his forehead against the doorframe, his voice breaking completely. “I’m sorry. I was wrong! I was jealous of you! I was terrified that you were becoming bigger than me, that people would look at you and see how small I was! Please... come home. Tell Thomas it was a mistake.”
I looked at the man I had spent three years trying to love.
The illusion was completely gone. Behind the expensive suits and the arrogant dinner table comments was just a desperate, insecure boy who destroyed everything he touched to make himself feel tall.

“It wasn't a mistake, Daniel,” I whispered softly. “It was the moment I finally woke up.”
I closed the door gently in his face and slid the deadbolt into place.
