Part 1

"My husband cooked dinner that evening, and seconds after my son and I finished eating, we both collapsed from sudden exhaustion. I forced myself to lie perfectly still, as if I’d passed out, and that’s when I heard him whispering on the phone: “It’s done. They’ll be gone soon.” As soon as he stepped away, I murmured to my son, “Don’t move yet…” What happened next was something I never could have imagined.

Julian moved around the kitchen as if he was trying to seem normal. He hummed while cooking, wiped the counters obsessively, and set the table with our best plates instead of the everyday ones. He poured Evan a small glass of apple juice and gave a smile that looked practiced.

“Dad the cook,” Evan joked. “Chef Julian.”

I smiled too, even though I felt uneasy. Lately, Julian had been… controlled. Not warm. Controlled. Like someone preparing for something.

We ate chicken with rice. Julian barely touched his plate. He kept glancing at his phone, face down beside him, as if waiting for a signal. Then, in the middle of the meal, my tongue felt thick and heavy. My arms and legs turned weak. My vision blurred.

Evan rubbed his eyes. “Mom… I’m really tired.”

Julian patted his shoulder gently. “It’s okay, buddy. Just rest.” Panic shot through me. I pushed my chair back, but my legs didn’t hold. The table slipped from my grip. The floor rushed up.

I knew I only had seconds before everything went dark, so I let my body go limp while staying fully aware. I hit the carpet, my cheek pressed into the fibers. Evan slumped beside me with a small whimper. I wanted to reach for him, call his name, but I stayed motionless.

Julian’s chair scraped. His footsteps came closer. He stopped over me. His presence made me go cold. He nudged me with his shoe.

“Good,” he breathed.

Then he picked up his phone and walked down the hallway. His voice grew quieter, almost relieved.

“It’s over,” Julian said. “They ate it all. They’ll both be gone soon.” A chill ran through me. A woman’s voice crackled from the speaker. “Are you sure?”

“Yes,” he replied. “I used the right amount. It’ll look like an accident. I’ll call for help once it’s too late.”

“Finally,” she whispered. “We can’t keep hiding.” Julian exhaled hard. “Finally, I’m free.”

I heard drawers opening. Metal clinked. He came back carrying something that dragged softly along the floor. He stood over us again.

“Goodbye,” he whispered.

The front door opened. Cold air poured in. Then it shut. Silence spread through the room. My heartbeat felt like thunder in my chest.

I barely moved my lips and whispered to Evan, “Not yet… don’t move.”

And then, slowly, his small hand tightened around mine. He was awake.
