Chapter 3 - The Cold Awakening in Lincoln Park

While the snow fell thick and fast over the windy city, the Lincoln Park townhouse was waking up to a very different reality.

At 7:30 AM, Grant Mercer walked down the curved wooden staircase, smelling the rich, bitter aroma of freshly brewed Colombian coffee. He expected to find Evelyn bustling around the kitchen, quietly preparing his breakfast before his big morning investor pitch, trying to make amends for walking out the night before.

Instead, the kitchen was completely silent.

The counters were clean. The refrigerator was empty, save for a single carton of skim milk.

Frowning, Grant walked into the living room.

Vanessa was sitting in the wheelchair near the fireplace, wearing the same cream cashmere robe, sipping coffee from a china mug that Paige had handed her. Marian was fussing over a stack of medical brochures on the coffee table.

— Where is she? Grant asked, his voice echoing in the quiet room.

Marian looked up, scoffing. — Still throwing her childish tantrum at that downtown hotel, no doubt. She’ll crawl back by noon once she realizes her credit cards are linked to your corporate account.

Grant pulled out his phone, his thumb swiping across the screen to open his mobile banking app. He needed to transfer funds for today’s closing costs on a secondary commercial warehouse acquisition.

He tapped the icon.

LOADING...

Then a red warning banner flashed across the screen:

ACCESS DENIED. ACCOUNT TEMPORARILY FROZEN PENDING FRAUD AUDIT.

Grant’s fingers froze. He stared at the screen, tapping it twice. Again, the same error message popped up.

— What the hell? he muttered under his breath.

He dialed his corporate chief financial officer, Arthur Vance.

The phone rang three times before Arthur answered. His voice sounded strained, entirely devoid of its usual sycophantic warmth.

— Grant. You need to get down to the corporate headquarters immediately.

— Arthur, what is going on with my accounts? My primary liquidity lines are frozen, and—

— Forget your personal accounts, Grant, Arthur interrupted sharply. The board of directors has called an emergency executive quorum for 9:00 AM. All venture capital disbursements have been halted by Vanguard Capital.

A cold spike of adrenaline pierced Grant’s chest. — Halting disbursements?! On the morning of our biggest product presentation?! Marcus Cole promised—

— Marcus Cole isn't running this meeting, Arthur snapped. The majority shareholder is.

— Who the hell is the majority shareholder?! We own fifty-one percent of the voting shares!

— Not according to the amended trust registry filed at midnight, Arthur said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. The entire seed portfolio belongs to Evelyn Hart. She just executed a total corporate recall.

The phone slipped from Grant’s hand.

It hit the hardwood floor with a sharp, plastic clatter, the battery cover popping off across the rug.

Vanessa turned her wheelchair around, her face pale. — Grant? What is it? What’s wrong?

Grant didn't answer. He stood paralyzed in the center of the room, the terrifying realization crashing over him like a tidal wave:

The quiet, submissive wife he had humiliated, displaced, and cast aside the night before wasn't just a minor annoyance.

She was the owner of his entire world.
