Chapter 3 - The Interruption

The silence in the ballroom was absolute. You could hear the hum of the air conditioning units and the distant shutter clicks of a paparazzi photographer near the side door.
Brenda’s lower lip trembled. She tried to pull the champagne-colored silk tighter around her shoulders, but the fabric only mocked her, displaying Vivian’s silhouette on an interloper’s body.
— Christopher, tell her to leave, Brenda whispered frantically, grabbing Christopher’s sleeve. She’s... she’s clearly unstable. Look at her! She crashed the charity gala!
Christopher stood frozen, sweat beading along his hairline. For all his corporate dominance, he looked like a cornered animal caught in the headlights of a freight train. He knew the legal structure of his empire; he knew whose name was on the foundational shares of Albright Enterprises.
— Vivian, let's not make a scene here, Christopher stammered, stepping forward, his hands raised placatingly. The press is present. We can discuss this at home—
— There is no home left to discuss, Christopher, a sharp, crisp voice cut through the air.
Marcus Vance, senior partner at Vance & Sterling Legal Counsel, stepped out from the shadows of the entryway, flanked by two armed court bailiffs carrying thick stacks of federal documentation.
Marcus adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, stepping up beside Vivian.
— Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, Marcus announced, his voice booming over the ballroom’s sound system as he effortlessly tapped the podium microphone. I am Marcus Vance, legal counsel for Mrs. Vivian Albright. Please remain seated. We have a few administrative updates regarding tonight's guest list.
Brenda scrambled up from her chair, her face flushed with panic. — You have no right! This is a private event! Christopher, do something!
— Sit down, Brenda, Vivian commanded, her voice dropping an octave into a tone so cold it made the surrounding executives flinch. You’re wearing my dress, sitting in my seat, and wearing stolen property. The least you can do is listen to your eviction notice.
Marcus opened a thick manila folder.
— Effective 8:45 PM tonight, a federal injunction has been filed and approved by Judge Harrison, Marcus read aloud, his tone clinical and unyielding. It freezes all personal and corporate assets held jointly or individually by Christopher Albright, pending a comprehensive forensic audit.
Christopher stumbled backward, colliding with the head table. — Freezes what? You can't freeze my accounts! I have payroll to meet! I have international contracts!
— You had international contracts, Marcus corrected smoothly. Furthermore, we have filed criminal complaints for industrial espionage, financial fraud, and administration of a controlled substance against Brenda Vance, based on digital evidence recovered from her personal cloud storage this afternoon.
Cameras flashed furiously now. Flashbulbs strobed across the room, capturing every second of Christopher’s humiliation and Brenda’s sheer, unadulterated terror.
Brenda turned on Christopher, her voice rising to a hysterical shriek. — You told me she wouldn't wake up! You said the lawyers had already locked her out! You said—
Christopher lunged forward, his face purple with rage. — Shut your mouth, you absolute idiot!
— Too late for damage control, Mr. Albright, a calm, youthful voice echoed from the rear of the ballroom.
All heads turned toward the center doors.

Luke Albright walked down the aisle. He wasn't wearing a tuxedo. He wore a simple dark hoodie and jeans, carrying a sleek silver laptop in one hand. But the way the room parted for him—the way senior executives instinctively shrank back from his path—bore the unmistakable weight of power.
Luke stopped right beside his mother, looking up at his father with eyes devoid of any filial warmth.
