Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Showdown

The Portland Family Courthouse was surrounded by reporters and flashing cameras. The public’s obsession with the "Vance-Harlan War" had reached a fever pitch.

Russell walked up the steps, wearing a cheap, borrowed suit, trying to look like a humbled, repentant father. He smiled for the cameras, pretending to care.

Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was tense. Russell and his lawyer sat on one side. When the double doors opened, Callie entered. She walked with absolute grace, flanked by Colonel Whitaker and a team of top-tier attorneys. She wore a stunning, crisp white blazer—a symbol of a fresh start—and did not look at Russell once.

"The court is now in session," the judge announced, slamming the gavel. "We are here to petition for temporary custody and asset division."

Russell’s lawyer stood up immediately, putting on a dramatic show. "Your Honor, my client, Russell Harlan, is a grieving father. He was unfairly pushed out of his own home and separated from his newborn children during a highly emotional time. We argue that Mrs. Callie Vance is using her immense wealth to alienate a loving father from his children. Furthermore, we believe she is suffering from severe postpartum psychosis, making her unfit to have sole custody."

A murmur went through the gallery. Russell smirked secretly, thinking he had landed a solid blow.

Callie’s lead attorney, a legendary litigator named Eleanor Vance, stood up calmly.

"Your Honor," Eleanor said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "We have prepared a response to these laughable claims. First, let us address the 'loving father' narrative."

Eleanor pressed a button, and the large screen in the courtroom lit up.

It showed a high-definition video of the hospital room on the day Callie gave birth. The audio was crystal clear.

“The joint accounts are closed. The credit cards are canceled. The condo is in my name now... They're fragile, Callie. So are you. I'm not wasting the rest of my life on this.”

The courtroom gasped. The reporters began scribbling furiously. Russell’s lawyer went pale.

"Furthermore," Eleanor continued, submitting a stack of financial documents. "We have proof that Mr. Harlan was transferring company funds into the personal account of his mistress, Tessa Blake, while his wife was in emergency surgery. He also deliberately falsified his financial disclosures to the court."

The judge looked at Russell with absolute disgust. "Mr. Harlan, do you have anything to say for yourself?"

Russell panicked. He jumped to his feet, ignoring his lawyer’s frantic attempts to pull him down. "She set me up! She’s a liar! She hid her wealth from me for years! If she had just told me who she was, I would have never done any of this!"

The silence that followed his outburst was absolute. He had just admitted, in front of the judge and the press, that his love was entirely conditional on money.

The judge slammed the gavel down hard. "I have heard enough."
