Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

At exactly 1:55 PM, the glass double doors of the Apex Development executive boardroom swung open.

The room was designed to intimidate. A massive, twenty-seat walnut conference table dominated the center, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Savannah riverfront. Seated around the table were the five members of Apex’s board of directors—wealthy, influential figures who owed their positions and lucrative annual stipends entirely to Ethan Cole.

When Ethan walked in, he looked like a man possessed.

His hair was slightly disheveled, his tie loosened, and his face flushed with murderous rage. He had spent the last four hours with his high-priced legal team convincing a sympathetic judge to release him on bond, assuring everyone that his wife’s injuries were the result of a "tragic domestic accident" and that his unhinged brother-in-law was waging a personal vendetta.

“What is the meaning of this?” Ethan boomed, slamming his leather briefcase onto the mahogany table. “Marcus tells me an emergency board meeting was called under my corporate ID without my authorization! Who authorized this?”

At the far end of the table, seated in the high-backed leather chair traditionally reserved for the majority shareholder, sat Dr. Liam Carter.

Beside Liam sat corporate attorney Sarah Vance (no relation to Marcus, thank goodness), representing the private family trust, along with two federal investigators from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission whom Liam had quietly looped in that morning.

Ethan froze, his eyes locking onto the empty seat beside Liam—the seat where I usually sat in silence, invisible and ignored.

“You,” Ethan hissed, his voice dropping an octave as he advanced toward the table. “Where is Maya? What kind of circus are you trying to pull here?”

“Maya couldn't make it, Mr. Cole,” Liam said smoothly, rising from his chair. He didn't flinch as Ethan towered over him. “She’s recovering from a fractured skull and bruised ribs. Courtesy of you.”

Murmurs erupted around the boardroom. Several board members shifted uncomfortably in their seats. Arthur Sterling, the senior-most board member and a longtime family friend of my late father, cleared his throat.

“Now see here, Ethan,” Arthur said cautiously. “There are serious allegations circulating. The police department filed a domestic incident report this morning, and—”

“It’s a lie!” Ethan roared, slamming his fist against the table, rattling the crystal water pitchers. “My wife is unstable! She fell down the stairs during a manic episode! This is a coordinated smear campaign by her family to seize control of my company!”

“Your company, Ethan?”

A cool, steady voice cut through the shouting like a razor blade.

All heads turned toward the side entrance of the boardroom.

I walked in.

I was still wearing my hospital-issued black sweatpants and a loose zip-up hoodie over my taped ribs, my neck supported by a discreet beige cervical collar. My face still bore the faint yellow and purple bruising along my jawline where his ring had caught my skin. But I walked with my chin held high, my posture absolute, every bit the forensic accountant who had built this enterprise from the ground up.

Silence fell over the room so heavy you could hear the hum of the overhead projector.

Ethan’s face turned the color of ash. “Maya... what are you doing out of the hospital? You’re... you’re out of your mind.”

“I’m entirely of sound mind, Ethan,” I said, walking slowly to the head of the table and placing my hand flat on the mahogany wood. “Which is more than I can say for a CEO who embezzled $4.2 million in corporate reserves, falsified quarterly earnings reports, and committed federal wire fraud to cover up his failing personal investments.”

“That’s absurd!” Ethan screamed, lunging forward, but the two U.S. Marshals stationed near the doorway stepped in instantly, blocking his path with their hands on their weapons.

“Mr. Ethan Cole,” the lead federal agent announced loudly, pulling a folded document from his jacket. “You are hereby served with a federal warrant for wire fraud, money laundering, and corporate embezzlement pursuant to an ongoing SEC and federal grand jury investigation.”

Ethan stared at the document in sheer, paralyzingly horror. He looked around the table at his hand-picked board members, but one by one, every single person averted their eyes, terrified of being implicated in his financial crimes.

“And as for your position as Chief Executive Officer of Apex Development,” I continued, my voice ringing clear and cold across the silent room, “pursuant to Section 4 of the irrevocable family trust holding absolute majority voting control—which I own, and which you foolishly ignored for six years—”

I reached into my pocket, pulled out a formal legal document bearing my signature stamped at 9:00 AM that morning, and dropped it onto the table.

“You are hereby terminated, stripped of all executive authority, and permanently barred from entering any company property effective immediately.”

Ethan let out a sound like a wounded animal—a mixture of rage, disbelief, and primal terror—before lunging toward me across the table.

“YOU BITCH!” he screamed.

Before he could take two steps, the U.S. Marshals tackled him to the polished oak floor, pinning his arms behind his back as the heavy steel handcuffs clicked shut for the second time that day.

As they dragged him out of the boardroom, kicking and screaming obscenities that echoed down the hallway, I didn’t flinch. I simply sat down in the CEO’s chair, looked at the stunned faces of the board members, and opened my laptop.

“Now,” I said calmly, “let’s begin the audit.”
