Chapter 3 - The Forensic Audit

"What the hell is this?!" Grant roared, his aristocratic veneer completely tearing away as he lunged toward Vance. "You can't freeze my accounts! I am the majority shareholder of Mercer Global! Who do you think you are?!"

"I'm the man executing a federal asset seizure, Grant," Vance said, as four more plainclothes detectives stepped out from behind him, cutting off every exit from the hospital room. "Your wife didn't just upload videos of your assaults. As a former senior forensic accountant, she spent her weekends tracing your corporate ledger."

The room went dead silent. Grant turned his head toward me slowly, his eyes wide with a terrifying mixture of confusion and sudden, suffocating panic.

"Every time you poured yourself a bourbon and left me bleeding on the floor, Grant, you went straight to your study to celebrate your business deals," I said, my voice no longer a whisper. I sat up in the hospital bed, ignoring the agonizing pain in my ribs, looking down at him from the mattress. "You thought I was crying in the bathroom. In reality, I was using the keylogger I installed on your laptop to copy your offshore routing numbers."

"You... you bitch," Grant hissed, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white.

"Three years ago, you told me a Mercer wife doesn't chase criminals through spreadsheets," I said, a cold, clinical smile finally breaking across my cracked lips. "But you forgot one thing: I wasn't chasing a criminal. I was baiting a trap for one. Every charity gala you hosted, every 'donation' your foundation made, was a front for a multi-million-dollar trade-insulation scheme. I mapped the entire network."

"This is a lie! It’s inadmissible!" Grant shouted, targeting the police officers. "She’s a disgruntled spouse! She has no authority!"

"She has federal whistle-blower immunity, Mr. Mercer," Detective Vance corrected smoothly, stepping forward with a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. "And the Attorney General just signed the emergency freeze on your assets under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. As of five minutes ago, you don't even own the watch on your wrist."

The steel clicked around Grant's wrists with a definitive, bone-chilling snap. The man who had spent three years laughing at my pain looked down at his hands, his breath coming in short, panicked gasps as the reality of his total ruin finally broke through his vanity.
