Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW OF THE PAST

By three o'clock that afternoon, the news of the arrest of Marcus Moretti and Isabella Rossi had sent shockwaves through Wall Street. Moretti Enterprises' stock price, far from crashing, surged fifteen percent as investors celebrated the removal of corporate corruption and the triumphant return of its brilliant, recovered Chairman.

I stepped out of the executive elevator into the penthouse on Seventy-Fourth Street.

The apartment was no longer the gloomy, suffocating tomb it had been for six months. The heavy velvet drapes had been pulled back, filling the spacious living room with glorious afternoon sunlight.

Elena was standing near the fireplace, wearing a simple cream knit sweater and jeans, looking at a framed photograph of my father.

Lily was sitting on the thick oriental rug, happily playing with a set of wooden building blocks that Marco had bought her from a toy store down the street.

"Daddy!" Lily squealed the moment she saw me walk through the door.

She scrambled to her feet, her little yellow sneakers squeaking against the polished floorboards, and charged toward me with open arms.

I dropped to my knees, wrapping my arms around her small, warm body, pulling her tight against my chest, lifting her up into the air as I stood back up.

"Hey, my little healer," I smiled, kissing her cheek, her loud, giggling laughter filling the room like music.

Elena turned around, her eyes widening as she saw me walking effortlessly, carrying our daughter, looking at her with complete, sharp clarity.

She covered her mouth with both hands, tears welling in her soft hazel eyes.

"You can see," she whispered, stepping toward us.

"I can see everything," I said, stepping forward, holding Lily in one arm while my free hand wrapped around Elena’s waist, pulling them both against me. "I can see the most beautiful woman in the world, and the bravest little girl in New York."

Elena rested her forehead against mine, her warm breath hitting my lips, her hands clutching the lapels of my jacket.

"Is it really over?" she asked, her voice trembling with lingering fear born from four years of hiding in the shadows. "Are they really gone?"

"They are in federal custody," I promised, looking directly into her eyes. "Marcus and Isabella will spend the rest of their lives behind bars. The estate is secure. The company is clean. No one will ever threaten you or Lily again. I swear it on my life."

A long, shuttering sigh of relief escaped Elena’s lips, her body going soft against mine as four years of unbearable tension melted away.

"Mr. Moretti?" Marco's deep voice interrupted quietly from the foyer.

I turned, still holding Elena and Lily close. "Yes, Marco?"

"The federal prosecutors have finished searching Marcus's private safe at the estate in Long Island," Marco reported, holding a thick manila folder. "They found something that belonged to your father. Something he left specifically for Elena before he passed away."

I frowned, taking the folder from Marco's hand.

Inside lay a signed, notarized trust deed dated four years ago—signed by my father three days before his death.

It was a primary land grant for a twelve-hundred-acre estate in Montauk, complete with an oceanfront villa, a private vineyard, and a fifty-million-dollar educational fund registered under the name: Lily Vance Moretti.

Attached to the deed was a small, handwritten note from my father in his shaky, terminal handwriting:

To my son, Dominic,

If you are reading this, it means you have finally found your way out of the shadows. I knew Marcus was moving against us, but I was too sick to stop him. I knew Elena was pregnant when she vanished, and I spent my final days ensuring that no matter what trickery Marcus attempted, your child’s future would be protected beyond his reach.

Take her to Montauk, Dominic. Build the home we never had in the city. Teach her to love the light.

Love, Your Father.

Tears blurred my vision—not from chemical poisons, but from pure, overwhelming emotion.

I handed the note to Elena. As she read her father-in-law's final words, tears spilled down her cheeks, a quiet, beautiful smile spreading across her face.

"He knew," Elena whispered, looking up at me. "Your father knew about Lily."

"He knew," I agreed, kissing her forehead softly. "And he built us a sanctuary."

Lily reached out, her little hand touching my cheek, her bright hazel eyes looking at me with absolute, pure curiosity.

"Daddy?" she asked softly.

My heart skipped a beat. Hearing her say Daddy for the first time with full knowledge of who I was made every second of suffering worth it.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Are we going to the ocean house with the yellow leaves?"

May you like

I laughed, pulling her closer, pressing my face into her dark curls that smelled of sweet vanilla and fresh rain.

"Yes, my little lion," I whispered. "We are going home."
