Chapter 5 - The War for Brooks Global

Three Weeks Later

The battle lines were drawn not in a small diner in Indiana, but in the glass-and-steel monolith of the Brooks Global Building on Park Avenue in Manhattan.

Victoria Brooks had launched a corporate coup.

Exploiting Ethan’s three-week absence in Indiana, Victoria had rallied the conservative faction of the board of directors, calling an emergency shareholder vote to strip Ethan of his Chief Executive powers under Clause 14-B of the corporate charter—citing "unstable personal conduct and unauthorized asset diversion."

The board meeting was set for 10:00 AM on a crisp November morning.

At 9:55 AM, the boardroom on the sixty-fifth floor was packed with twenty-four of the most powerful corporate players in North America. Sitting at the head of the polished mahogany table was Victoria Brooks, wearing a severe navy suit, flanked by her allies and Julianna Sterling’s father, Harrison Sterling.

"Ethan has lost his mind," Victoria announced to the murmur of approval from the board. "He has abandoned his duties, moved to a farm town in the Midwest, and is attempting to recognize an illegitimate child from a dissolved marriage. We must protect the Sterling merger and relieve him of command immediately."

"Is that so, Mother?"

The heavy double glass doors of the boardroom swung open with explosive force!

Ethan walked in, looking every inch the unstoppable corporate titan—wearing a bespoke pinstripe suit, his hair perfectly styled, his jaw set like iron.

Beside him walked me.

I wore an elegant cream-colored silk dress, my dark hair styled in soft waves, holding myself with the effortless grace of a woman who had nothing left to fear.

And walking right between us, holding both our hands, was Theo, wearing a tiny dark suit and a red bow tie.

The entire boardroom went dead silent.

Victoria stood up from her chair, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the edge of the table. "Ethan! What is the meaning of bringing this... this circus into a board meeting?!"

Ethan didn't answer her. He walked straight to the head of the table, pulling out the massive leather chair reserved for the Chairman.

He didn't sit down. Instead, he reached down and lifted Theo onto the seat beside him.

"Members of the board," Ethan’s voice boomed across the room, echoing off the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking Central Park. "Allow me to introduce my son and sole legal heir, Theodore Vance-Brooks."

Harrison Sterling frowned, slamming his heavy hand onto the table. "Ethan! This is absurd! We are ten minutes away from executing a forty-billion-dollar merger! We don't care about your private soap opera!"

"You will care about this, Harrison," Ethan said coldly.

He reached into his leather briefcase and pulled out a thick document bearing the official seal of the New York State Supreme Court and the United States Department of Defense.

"Three days ago," Ethan revealed, tossing the document onto the center of the table, "I executed a complete restructuring of my personal stock holdings. Fifty-one percent of all voting shares in Brooks Global have been placed into an irrevocable trust managed jointly by my wife, Emily Vance-Brooks, and myself."

Victoria gasped, her face draining of all color. "You... you gave her voting power?!"

"She is my wife, Victoria," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register that terrified every person in the room. "And as of nine o'clock this morning, the Department of Defense has officially approved our security clearance update, recognizing Emily as Vice-Chairperson of the Board."

He looked around the table, his eyes locking onto every board member who had sided with his mother.

"Any vote taken today without Emily’s written consent is legally void," Ethan declared. "And as my first official act as Chairman... I am terminating the merger with Sterling Enterprises."

"You can't do this!" Harrison Sterling screamed, jumping to his feet! "You'll destroy the stock value!"

"The stock value rose twelve percent twenty minutes ago when Wall Street learned my family was united," Ethan retorted flatly.

He turned his head to look directly at Victoria, who was trembling violently near the window.

"Mother," Ethan said softly, his voice devoid of anger, left only with profound disappointment. "You are hereby removed from the Board of Directors. Security will escort you to your vehicle, and your access to the Brooks estate in the Hamptons has been revoked."

Victoria looked around the room, desperately searching for support among the board members. But one by one, every director dropped their eyes, refusing to meet her gaze. The power had shifted. The empire had a new king—and a queen.

"Ethan..." Victoria choked out, tears finally breaking past her cold demeanor. "I did everything for this family..."

"No, Mother," Ethan said, taking my hand in his. "You did everything for power. And in the process, you almost cost me my life."

Two security officers stepped into the room, gently guiding Victoria toward the exit. She paused at the door, looking back one last time at Theo, who was sitting quietly in the Chairman's chair, drawing a dinosaur on a piece of executive notepad paper.

The door closed behind her, marking the end of a thirty-year reign of terror.
