Chapter 3 - The Broken Pedestal

By 9:00 a.m. the following day, the financial hammer fell upon the Whitaker household with devastating force.

Bank accounts were frozen by court injunctions. Foreclosure notices were slapped on the heavy oak doors of the Beacon Hill mansion. The Whitaker family’s corporate shares dropped twenty-four percent in pre-market trading as news leaked that their primary creditor had pulled all liquidity backing.

Inside the federal courthouse, Federal Prosecutor Charles Whitaker slammed a heavy case file onto his desk, staring at Camille across the room.

“You lied to me, Camille,” Charles said, his voice cold and furious. “You told me you had hard evidence that Gabriel was using the South Boston piers for illegal smuggling operations. My agents spent eight hours going through those servers. Every manifest is clean. Every tax form is filed to the penny. The man runs his legitimate logistics business cleaner than a bank!”

Camille’s face turned pale. “That’s impossible! He’s a Moretti! Everyone knows how his father made his money!”

“His father is dead!” Charles snapped. “Gabriel reorganized the entire family structure seven years ago! He moved eighty percent of his assets into legitimate security firms, maritime logistics, and commercial real estate! He doesn't leave paper trails because he doesn't break federal laws anymore! He pays his taxes, he pays his workers twice the union rate, and he has three former federal judges on his advisory board!”

Charles leaned over his desk, pointing a finger at his niece. “You used my office to fight a personal vendetta against a man who just foreclosed on your father’s entire estate. Because of your stupidity, your father is bankrupt, and my office looks like a joke in front of the magistrate!”

Camille backed out of the office, her head spinning wildly. She walked out into the chilly Boston air, her high heels clicking frantically against the granite steps of the courthouse.

Her phone rang. It was her mother, weeping uncontrollably.

“Camille! Where are you? The sheriff’s deputies are here! They’re putting moving tags on the furniture! Your father had a chest pain—they’re taking him to the hospital!”

Camille hung up, her hands shaking so violently she dropped her phone onto the stone steps, spiderwebbing the glass screen.

She realized, with a sickening drop in her stomach, the magnitude of the mistake she had made. Gabriel hadn't just taken off his engagement ring; he had removed the single pillar holding up her family's illusion of power.

Desperate, terrified, and stripped of her pride, Camille got into her sports car and drove straight to the Moretti estate.

When she arrived at the high iron gates surrounding the estate, the guards did not open them. Two heavy-set men in dark suits stepped out of the gatehouse, their arms folded across their chests.

Camille rolled down her window, her voice shrill with desperation. “Let me in! I need to see Gabriel!”

The lead guard, a man named Dominic who had worked for Gabriel for twelve years, looked down at her with a look of absolute disdain.

“Mr. Moretti gave strict orders, Miss Whitaker,” Dominic said smoothly. “You are not permitted on the property.”

“Tell him I’m here!” Camille screamed, banging her palm against the steering wheel. “Tell him it’s an emergency! My father is in the hospital!”

The heavy gates remained closed. Dominic simply turned his back and walked into the gatehouse, shutting the door behind him.

Camille slumped against her leather seat, staring through the iron bars at the long, winding driveway leading up to the grand stone manor. She saw the estate staff—gardeners, housekeepers, security guards—moving peacefully across the pristine grounds.

She saw Elena, the maid she had burned three days ago, walking down the stone path wearing a soft woolen coat, her forearm neatly bandaged, laughing softly as she talked with Marco.

They were safe. They were protected. They belonged to Gabriel’s world.

And Camille was locked outside in the cold.
