Chapter 10 - Shadows Lengthening

While we planned our bright future, Vivian Hale was discovering just how lonely life is when your power and money vanish.
Confined to a modest, sterile motel room on the outskirts of the city—paid for by the meager remnants of a hidden savings account she managed to siphon before her accounts were frozen—Vivian sat in front of a flickering television screen broadcasting local news reports about the dismantling of her estate.
Her phone, once buzzing constantly with calls from sycophantic socialites, committee presidents, and political donors, sat completely silent on the nightstand. Not a single person from her glittering social circle had called to check on her. To them, Vivian Hale was no longer a queen bee; she was a toxic liability.
There was a sharp knock at the motel door.
Vivian froze, her heart hammering against her ribs. For a fleeting second, she hoped it might be Beatrice coming to rescue her with a brilliant plan to turn things around.
She pulled the door open.
Standing in the dim, flickering fluorescent light of the motel hallway were two officers from the state prosecutor’s office, holding official folders bearing court seals.
“Mrs. Vivian Hale?” the lead officer asked coldly.
Vivian swallowed hard, her voice dry as dust. “Yes?”

“You are formally summoned to appear before the State Superior Court on charges of grand larceny, document falsification, and corporate fraud. Please turn around and place your hands behind your back.”
Vivian stared at the gleaming steel handcuffs in the officer’s hands, the full, crushing weight of her reality finally crashing down upon her. There were no lawyers to bribe, no servants to order around, and no daughters to bully. The empire built on lies had completely crumbled to dust.
