Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

The emergency hearing at the Suffolk County Family and Probate Court was scheduled for 9:00 AM on Friday. Dominic had scraped together the last remnants of his depleted credit to hire a notoriously aggressive celebrity custody attorney named Harrison Vance (no relation to Charlotte), known for using smear tactics to unseat mothers in high-net-worth divorces.

The hallway outside Courtroom 402 was packed with local press. Dominic stood near the window, wearing a brand-new suit—likely bought on credit—trying desperately to look like a concerned, loving father. Beside him stood his attorney, whispering last-minute instructions.

When I arrived, accompanied by Marcus Vance and carrying Chloe in a covered infant carrier, Dominic stepped forward, a smug, cruel smile playing on his lips. “Morning, Evelyn,” he whispered as I walked past him. “Ready to explain to the judge why you brought a newborn to a corporate raid hours after giving birth? The psychiatric evaluation request is already signed.”

I didn't even look at him. I walked straight into the courtroom and took my place at the petitioner’s table.

Judge Margaret Higgins, a sharp-eyed woman in her sixties with a reputation for zero-tolerance in corporate custody disputes, entered the courtroom and took the bench. “We are here in the matter of Sovereign v. Reed, Emergency Motion for Temporary Protective Custody and Psychiatric Evaluation,” she announced, opening the file.

Dominic’s attorney, Harrison Vance, immediately stood up. “Your Honor, my client, Mr. Dominic Sovereign, seeks immediate temporary emergency custody of his newborn child, Chloe. As detailed in our affidavit, the mother, Ms. Evelyn Reed, exhibited severe, unhinged behavior less than one hour after labor, calling security on the father, launching hostile corporate maneuvers from a hospital bed, and demonstrating clear signs of post-partum psychosis and extreme emotional volatility that endanger the infant.”

Judge Higgins raised an eyebrow, looking over her glasses at my table. “Ms. Vance? Ms. Reed? What say you?”

Marcus Vance stood up smoothly. “Your Honor, if I may. We have two submissions for the court before we address Mr. Sovereign’s absurd allegations.”

Marcus walked forward, handing two thick manila folders to the court bailiff.

“First,” Marcus announced, his voice echoing clearly across the courtroom, “we submit the certified medical evaluation from Dr. Aris Thorne, Chief of Obstetrics at Boston General Hospital, signed two hours ago. It confirms that Ms. Reed is in exceptional physical and mental health, exhibiting zero signs of post-partum depression or psychosis, and is fully capable of providing elite care for her child.”

Harrison Vance frowned. “Your Honor, that is a unilateral medical report—”

“Second,” Marcus interrupted, his voice raising with powerful authority, “we submit the arrest warrant issued thirty minutes ago by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.”

Dominic froze in his chair. “What?!”

“The warrant,” Marcus continued, turning to face Dominic with cold triumph, “charges Mr. Dominic Sovereign with eight counts of federal wire fraud, three counts of grand larceny, two counts of document tampering, and one count of intentional embezzlement of corporate pension funds totaling four million dollars—evidence for which was corroborated late yesterday evening via financial records recovered from his offshore Liechtenstein accounts.”

A loud gasp erupted from the gallery. Dominic turned white as a sheet, staring at Marcus as if he had seen a ghost.

“In addition,” Marcus added, laying a third document on the judge’s bench, “we submit an emergency protective order executed by Ms. Charlotte Vance, testifying that Mr. Sovereign attempted to bribe witnesses and destroy evidence on the night of their canceled wedding.”

Judge Higgins looked at the documents, her face growing colder and stern by the second. She slammed her gavel down with a sharp, echoing CRACK that rattled the wooden benches.

“Mr. Vance!” Judge Higgins barked at Dominic’s attorney. “Are you telling me you brought an emergency custody petition to my courtroom on behalf of a man who is currently subject to an active federal arrest warrant for multi-million dollar fraud?!”

“Your Honor... we... we were unaware of the active federal warrant—” Harrison Vance stammered, his arrogant posture dissolving into utter panic.

“This court finds Mr. Sovereign’s motion not only completely devoid of merit, but a bad-faith abuse of the judicial process designed to harass and intimidate the mother!” Judge Higgins declared furiously. “Motion denied with prejudice! Furthermore, I am issuing an immediate, permanent restraining order prohibiting Mr. Sovereign from coming within five hundred yards of Ms. Reed or the infant child Chloe!”

Before Dominic could even speak, the heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.

Four federal marshals in dark suits walked down the center aisle, accompanied by two Boston police officers. The lead marshal approached Dominic’s table, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

“Dominic Sovereign,” the marshal announced loudly. “You are under arrest for federal financial crimes against the United States government. Stand up and put your hands behind your back.”

“No! Wait! You don't understand! This is a mistake! Evelyn did this! She set me up!” Dominic screamed, struggling as the marshals grabbed his arms and forced them behind his back, clicking the cold steel cuffs around his wrists.

The press cameras flashed furiously from the gallery, capturing every second of his pathetic breakdown. Dominic looked across the courtroom at me—his eyes filled with wild, desperate pleading.

“Evelyn! Please! Tell them! Talk to them! You know I can’t go to prison! Evelyn!” he shrieked as he was dragged down the center aisle.

I stood up quietly, cradling Chloe against my chest. I looked him dead in the eyes as he was paraded past my table.

“Goodbye, Dominic,” I said softly. “Your image is officially restored.”
