Chapter 4 - The Spider's Web

The silence inside the study was deafening.

Outside, the rain beat a relentless rhythm against the glass, but inside, the barrel of Calvin’s gun remained perfectly level with my heart.

"Fifteen years, Calvin," I said, my voice barely a whisper, fighting to keep the raw, suffocating betrayal from breaking my posture. "I treated you like a brother. I gave you equity in my shipping companies. I paid for your daughter's medical treatments in Switzerland!"

"And you treated me like an employee!" Calvin snapped, his jaw tightening as his eyes flashed with long-buried resentment. "Every victory was Mateo Alvarez's empire! Every headline was about the great patriarch! You sat in this estate playing god, while I did the dirty work that kept your ships moving and your restaurants clean!"

"So you helped Hilda murder my wife?!" I roared, taking a step forward.

"Don't move!" Calvin barked, clicking the safety off his weapon. "Elena was an accident! She wasn't supposed to find the Foundation ledgers! Hilda panicked... she handled Elena without my permission."

"And my daughters?" I spat, tears of pure rage burning my eyes. "Starving two little girls... was that an accident too, Calvin?!"

"It was necessary management!" Calvin hissed. "If those girls were healthy and energetic, you would have hired a full-time team of nannies, tutors, and pediatricians! You would have opened the house up again! We needed you isolated, Mateo! We needed you grieving in this dark study while Arthur and I finalized the transfer of the Alvarez shipping rights to our European partners!"

Beside the fireplace, Clara shrank back into her leather chair, her hands clasped over her mouth, watching the standoff in terror.

"You're too late, Calvin," I lied, keeping my voice smooth as ice. "I’ve already transmitted the files on that laptop to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Memphis. A tactical team is already en route."

Calvin let out a dry, bitter laugh. "Nice try, Mateo. I manage your network grid. The moment you locked this study door, my private jamming unit in the hallway killed all satellite and cellular signals within a two-mile radius. No one is coming."

He raised his weapon, aiming directly between my eyes.

"Hilda is upstairs right now," Calvin revealed with a cruel, cold smile. "She’s packing your daughters into the back of a medical transport van. By sunrise, the public will hear a heartbreaking story about how Mateo Alvarez—distraught, unstable, and overwhelmed by grief—shot Elena’s former assistant in his study before taking his own life. Hilda will be named legal guardian of the Alvarez estate trust."

My stomach flipped into a nauseating abyss.

My daughters. They were upstairs right now, weak, helpless, and in the hands of the monster who had poisoned their mother.

"You forgot one detail, Calvin," I murmured softly.

Calvin’s eyebrows pulled together in slight confusion. "What detail?"

"I built this house," I said.

Before Calvin could pull the trigger, I slammed my foot down on the concealed brass pedal beneath the edge of my mahogany desk!

Instantly, the heavy, solid-oak security shutters installed inside the ceiling dropped like guillotine blades!

BANG!

The shutter slammed down directly onto Calvin’s extended forearm, crushing his wrist against the edge of the desk!

Calvin screamed in agony, dropping his weapon onto the rug as his gun went off, firing a stray bullet wildly into the ceiling plaster!

I lunged across the desk, grabbing Calvin by his jacket collar, and slammed his head back hard against the solid oak surface! He went limp, collapsing onto the Persian rug, unconscious, blood pooling from his nose.

I snatched up his fallen weapon, kicked his body aside, and turned to Clara.

"Stay here," I commanded, my eyes burning with absolute, terrifying authority. "Lock the door behind me."

"Mateo!" Clara cried out, standing up. "Hilda has armed security with her in the nursery wing!"

I racked the slide of Calvin’s silver gun, my face hardening into a mask of pure, unstoppable vengeance.

"They're in my house," I whispered. "And I am done playing the grieving husband."
