CHAPTER 8: THE REBUILDING

With Carmen behind bars and Javier awaiting a suspended sentence for his cooperation, the dark cloud that had hung over our lives finally began to dissipate. The media coverage slowly died down, replaced by new scandals, leaving us with the one thing we hadn't had in years: peace.

Sofia threw herself into her work. She had always loved interior design, a passion she had set aside to be the "perfect wife" for Javier. With a small loan from her father—which she insisted on paying back with interest—she opened her own boutique firm, New Dawn Designs.

I watched her transform. The girl who used to apologize for taking up space in a room was now pitching ideas to major corporate clients with confidence and grace. She no longer wore the muted, conservative clothes Carmen had forced upon her; she wore vibrant colors that matched her bright spirit.

One Saturday afternoon, I went to help her organize her new office space. To my surprise, Alexander was already there. He was sitting on the floor, surrounded by Swedish furniture parts, looking thoroughly confused by an instruction manual.

"The billionaire tech mogul defeated by a coffee table," I teased, walking in with cups of coffee.

Alexander looked up, flushing slightly. "The diagrams don't make logical sense, Elena. I can code an entire security mainframe, but this Allen wrench is an instrument of torture."

Sofia laughed, a beautiful, clear sound that filled the room. "Just put the legs on screw A, Dad."

Seeing them like this—normal, messy, laughing—warmed a part of my heart that I thought had died long ago.

Later, after Sofia left to meet a client, Alexander and I stayed behind to finish cleaning up. The silence between us was no longer heavy with unspoken accusations. It was comfortable.

"She’s doing so well," Alexander murmured, watching the door where Sofia had left. "I spent so much time trying to secure her financial future, I didn't realize that what she really needed was just to know she was capable on her own."

"We both made mistakes, Alexander," I said, leaning against the desk. "I ran away to Europe because I couldn't handle your secrets. I thought leaving was the only way to protect my own peace. But in doing so, I left Sofia to navigate your world alone for part of her life."

Alexander walked over to me. He reached out, his hand hesitating for a moment before gently placing it over mine. "Elena... when you left, the light in my life went out. I became ruthless because I felt I had nothing left to lose except my wealth. I thought if I lost that, I’d have truly failed."

"And now?" I asked, my breath catching in my throat.

"Now I know that wealth is nothing compared to this," he said, looking around the humble, half-finished office. "I don't want to be the man who commands an empire from a lonely tower anymore. I want to be the man who helps his daughter build tables. I want to be the man who deserves to sit at your table."

My heart pounded. The anger, the years of separation, the bitterness—it all seemed to melt away under the sincerity in his eyes. He wasn't demanding my forgiveness. He was asking for a chance to earn it.

"We have a lot of lost time to make up for," I whispered.

"I have the rest of my life," Alexander replied.
