Chapter 6 - A Table Built on Truth

Six months later.
The early autumn sun shone warmly over the tranquil waters of Silver Lake.
The red, gold, and orange leaves of the maple trees surrounding Nadia’s lakeside cottage fluttered down gently in the cool mountain breeze, carpeting the green grass in a vibrant mosaic of autumn color.
On the wooden back deck overlooking the water, a long rustic dining table was set for dinner.
Smells of roasted turkey, fresh garlic bread, grilled vegetables, and warm berry pie drifted from the outdoor kitchen, filling the air with a comforting, homey aroma.
Sitting around the table were the people who had stood by us when the world seemed dark.
Detective Mara Bennett sat on the left, laughing heartily as she shared a story with Special Agent Naomi Pierce and Major Livia Hart, who were both out of uniform, wearing comfortable sweaters and enjoying glasses of cold cider.
Beside them sat Dr. Kenneth Vance—who had resigned from Mercy General three months ago to become the Chief Medical Officer at Nadia’s newly restructured non-profit organization.
And sitting at the head of the table was Nadia.
She looked radiant. Her charity, now fully funded by court-ordered restitution from the Calder estate, had expanded nationwide, providing top-tier medical equipment, mental health support, and housing assistance to thousands of wounded veterans across the country.
She had reclaimed her life, her name, and her dignity.
I stepped out onto the deck carrying a large platter of grilled steaks, setting it down in the center of the wooden table.
"Dad!" Nadia called out, her eyes shining with joy as she stood up from her chair and wrapped her arms around my neck, giving me a huge, warm hug. "Everything smells incredible!"
"Only the best for my favorite director," I smiled, kissing her cheek before stepping back to look around the table at the extraordinary group of people gathered here.
"Attention, everyone!" Major Livia Hart called out, raising her glass of cider high into the air. "A toast!"
Everyone at the table quieted down, lifting their glasses in the warm sunlight.
"To Nadia Ward," Major Hart declared, her voice filled with deep, genuine respect. "A woman whose courage brought down a crooked empire."
"To Nadia!" everyone cheered, touching their glasses together in a warm chorus of sound.
"And," Detective Bennett added with a sly wink, looking at me, "to Colonel Arthur Ward. The man who reminded this state that an Army uniform might not mean anything to corrupt billionaires... but a father's love means everything."
Laughter and applause erupted around the table.
I smiled, sitting down in the chair right beside my daughter. I reached under the table, taking her hand in mine, feeling the solid, unshakeable reality of her safety, her happiness, and her freedom.
The Calders had believed that money, influence, and corrupt power could purchase impunity. They believed that people without massive bank accounts were small, weak, and easily silenced.
They were wrong.
True power wasn't found in corporate towers, offshore bank accounts, or political favors.
It was found in the truth. It was found in justice. And above all else, it was found in the fierce, unyielding protection of a parent’s love.

I looked out across the shimmering blue water of the lake as the autumn sun dipped below the mountains, casting a brilliant gold and crimson light over the deck.
My daughter was safe. The bad people were gone. And our family was finally, truly at peace.
