Chapter 2 - The Rebellious Illusion

At 9:00 AM on Sunday morning, the phone on my kitchen counter began to vibrate violently.

The caller ID displayed a name that made my blood boil: Javier Robles.

Alexander, who was sitting at the dining table sipping black coffee while reviewing financial schematics on a secure tablet, raised a hand to stop me from picking it up immediately.

“Put it on speaker,” Alexander commanded calmly. “Do not show anger. Do not show fear. Let him play his script.”

I took a deep breath, pressing my hand against my chest to settle my hammering heart, and swiped the screen to answer.

“Elena!” Javier’s voice burst through the speaker, sounding wildly frantic, rehearsed, and filled with loud, theatrical panic. “Thank God you picked up! Is Sofia with you?! She disappeared from the honeymoon suite last night! I’ve been driving around Dallas for hours looking for her!”

I looked across the table at Alexander. His face was completely devoid of emotion, but his eyes were tracking every word like a sniper aiming at a target.

“She is here, Javier,” I said, keeping my tone clipped and cold.

A heavy, deliberate pause lingered on the line. I could hear the faint sound of clinking porcelain tea cups in the background—he wasn’t in a car searching for his bride. He was sitting in a luxury breakfast room.

“Oh, thank heaven!” Javier exhaled loudly, playing the part of a distraught newlywed to absolute perfection. “Elena, listen to me… Sofia had a severe emotional breakdown last night. She was drinking heavily at the reception, and when we got to the suite, she started accusing me of horrible things. My mother came over to help calm her down, but Sofia became violent! She threw things at my mother and ran out into the rain! We were terrified she was going to hurt herself!”

I closed my eyes, my knuckles trembling as I fought the overwhelming urge to scream through the microphone. The sheer, shameless audacity of his lie was staggering.

“Is that what happened, Javier?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, laced with sharp poison.

“Yes! Absolutely!” Javier insisted smoothly. “Look, my mother and I are deeply concerned about her mental state. We’ve already contacted a private psychiatric team to evaluate her. My mother is on her way to your apartment right now with our family attorney to discuss getting Sofia the medical help she clearly needs. We need to handle this quietly before the press gets wind of it.”

Alexander gestured for me to hand him the phone. I slid it across the table.

Alexander picked up the device, bringing it close to his mouth.

“Javier,” Alexander said. The baritone of his voice was so heavy, so unexpectedly deep, that the line instantly fell into dead silence.

“Who… who is this?” Javier asked, his smooth, confident tone faltering for the first time.

“This is Colonel Alexander Brooks,” my ex-husband declared calmly. “Sofia’s father.”

A long, suffocating silence stretched over the call. Javier clearly hadn't expected Alexander to be in Texas, let alone sitting in my apartment at nine in the morning.

“C-Colonel Brooks…” Javier stammered, his polished facade cracking rapidly. “I… I didn’t know you were in town. Sir, I assure you, there’s been a massive misunderstanding—”

“There is no misunderstanding, Javier,” Alexander interrupted, his voice dropping into a register that sounded like grinding tectonic plates. “You stood outside Room 1204 while your mother and five other women physically assaulted my daughter. You instructed them not to hit her face so it wouldn't ruin your social appearances.”

Javier gasped loudly on the line. “That’s a lie! She’s hallucinating! She’s making things up because she refused to sign—”

He caught himself instantly, cutting his own sentence short, but it was far too late.

“Refused to sign what, Javier?” Alexander asked softly, a terrifying edge of quiet satisfaction in his voice. “The property transfer deed for her Uptown condo? The power of attorney forms your mother printed at her office at 4:15 PM on Friday afternoon?”

Javier’s breath rattled over the speaker. “You… you don’t know what you’re talking about…”

“Here is what is going to happen, son,” Alexander said, leaning back in his chair with casual, absolute dominance. “Your mother is currently driving her silver Mercedes toward this address. She is bringing her lawyer, Richard Vance, and her two sisters. When she arrives, she expects to intimidate two defenseless women.”

“Colonel, please—”

“Tell your mother to speed up,” Alexander ordered coldly. “We are waiting for her. And Javier? If you are not in that car with her, I will send a military police unit to pull you out of whatever country club breakfast you are currently enjoying.”

Alexander ended the call without waiting for a reply. He tossed the phone onto the table and took another slow sip of his black coffee.

“He’s terrified,” I said, feeling a strange, dark sense of empowerment blooming in my chest for the first time in twelve hours.

“He should be,” Alexander replied, looking toward the hallway where Sofia was slowly walking out.

She was wearing one of my oversized navy blue sweaters and sweatpants. Her dark hair was tied back, revealing the terrible swelling along her jawline and the deep red split on her lip. But her eyes—which had been shattered and hollow hours ago—were now focused. She had heard her father’s voice. She had seen the power he commanded.

“Dad,” Sofia said softly, walking over and sitting beside him. “Are they really coming here?”

Alexander reached out and gently tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear. “Yes, baby girl. They think they hold all the cards. They think because they have local prestige and a few dirty lawyers, they can push us into a corner.”

He pulled a small digital drive from his pocket and set it beside her coffee cup.

“What’s that?” she asked.

“That is the high-definition security footage from the hallway of the St. Regis Hotel, Suite 1204,” Alexander revealed calmly.

Sofia gasped. “The hotel said the hallway cameras were 'out of order' for maintenance last night!”

Alexander smiled—a sharp, wolfish grin. “The hotel’s public network was out of order because Carmen paid the night manager five thousand dollars to disable the local storage. What Carmen didn't know is that the St. Regis uses an off-site, cloud-based military-grade security backup system contracted through my firm. My team pulled the raw, unedited footage three hours ago.”

My heart skipped a beat. “You have video of them?”

“Everything,” Alexander said, his voice hardening into steel. “We have high-definition audio and video of Javier walking out of the room. We have video of Carmen entering with six women. We have clear audio of Carmen shouting at Sofia to sign the papers, the sound of the physical strikes, and Javier standing outside the door checking his wristwatch.”

I covered my face, tears of pure relief spilling down my cheeks. “It’s over. We can take this straight to the District Attorney! They’re going to prison!”

“No,” Alexander said firmly, shaking his head. “If we take this to a standard local court right now, Carmen’s lawyer will file endless motions, request bail, bribe officials, and drag Sofia through a horrific two-year public media trial that will destroy her reputation before Carmen ever sees the inside of a cell.”

Sofia looked at her father, her eyes wide. “Then what are we going to do, Dad?”

Alexander stood up as the sharp chime of the downstairs intercom rang through the apartment. He looked down at the display monitor mounted near the front door.

On the screen, a silver Mercedes-Benz had just pulled into the private driveway of my building. Stepping out of the vehicle was Carmen Robles, dressed in an immaculate cream-colored designer suit, wearing heavy gold jewelry, and carrying a leather briefcase. Beside her stood her arrogant family attorney, along with Javier, who looked pale, sweaty, and terrified.

Alexander adjusted the cuffs of his field shirt, his face settling into a mask of pure, unadulterated lethal confidence.

“We aren't going to court, Sofia,” Alexander said softly as the elevator dinged in the hallway outside our door. “We are going to execute a total, absolute surrender of the Robles family empire.”
