Chapter 2: The Severed Line

The heading on the notarized document stared back at Lucas in sharp, unyielding Times New Roman: REVOCATION OF FAMILY TRUST & IMMEDIATE ASSET RECOVERY.

Jennifer’s eyes darted across the page, her expensive mascara smudging slightly as she read the smaller print below. The luxury penthouse in Manhattan where they planned to live? Owned entirely by my corporate holding company. The black sports car Lucas had driven to the venue? Registered under my name. The executive vice president position awaiting him at my logistics firm on Monday morning? Canceled by a single stroke of my pen.

"Dad..." Lucas’s voice finally broke, dropping into a panicked whisper that the microphone caught perfectly. "What is this? You can't do this. Not today. Not in front of everyone."

"I didn't do this today, Lucas," I said, my voice cutting through the heavy air of the ballroom. "I did this six months ago. The day your mother sat you down, crying, to tell you the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes, and you told her you couldn't visit her in the hospital because Jennifer needed you to taste-test the wedding cakes."

A collective murmur rippled through the ballroom. Jennifer’s mother, a woman who prided herself on being the matriarch of New York high society, stood up from the head table, her diamond necklace catching the stage light. "Arthur! This is an outrage! You are humiliating your own son on his wedding day over a harmless joke!"

"A joke?" I turned my head, my eyes locking onto her. "Your daughter just assaulted a woman undergoing chemotherapy for the amusement of your friends. If that is a joke to the Sterling family, then you will find my financial reality highly entertaining."

I looked back at Lucas, whose face had gone from embarrassed to completely pale. He looked like a boy who had suddenly realized the ground beneath his feet was nothing but thin air.

"For twenty-six years, Lucas, your mother and I gave you everything," I said, handing the microphone back to the trembling emcee. "We gave you a name, an education, and a safety net. But a safety net is for a son who respects his family. You chose to stand by a bully because her family has a higher net worth. So, effective at midnight tonight, you are no longer a beneficiary of the Coleman estate. You are no longer an employee of Coleman Logistics. You are on your own."

Jennifer finally found her voice, her tone dropping its innocent act, revealing the sharp, predatory edge underneath. "You think you can ruin us, Arthur? My father is the CEO of Sterling Development! We don't need your provincial logistics money! Lucas is a Sterling now!"

"Is he?" I smiled, a cold, humorless expression. "Then I suggest your father check his email. Because ten minutes ago, my legal team officially terminated the shipping and supply-chain contracts between Coleman Logistics and Sterling Development. Without our fleet, your father’s construction materials are currently sitting in a warehouse in New Jersey, costing him three hundred thousand dollars a day in penalties."

The ballroom went dead silent. Jennifer’s father, Richard Sterling, who had been quietly drinking whiskey at the back table, suddenly dropped his glass. It shattered against the marble floor, the sharp sound echoing like a gunshot.
