Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Empire

Colin sat frozen in his wheelchair, the silence in the courtroom so dense it felt heavy enough to crush a man.

“Your Honor...” Donald Vance stammered, his face covered in sweat as he looked down at his client. “My... my client has no comment at this time. We wish to withdraw the settlement application immediately—”

“You will withdraw nothing, Mr. Vance!” Judge Montgomery thundered, slamming his gavel down with a noise like a gunshot. “Bailiff! Lock the doors of this courtroom!”

The heavy brass doors at the back of the gallery clicked shut with a decisive, echoing lock.

Special Agent Miller stood up beside me, pulling his federal badge from his coat pocket and displaying it prominently to the court reporter.

“Your Honor, Special Agent Miller, Virginia Insurance Fraud Bureau,” he announced loudly. “Based on the digital evidence provided, along with subpoenaed bank records from Chesapeake Medical Care LLC, we have active federal arrest warrants for Colin Harwood, Patricia Harwood, and Holly Price for wire fraud, insurance fraud, and conspiracy to commit perjury.”

Holly Price let out a piercing shriek, jumping out of her seat in the gallery. “I had nothing to do with the money! Colin told me he was already divorced! He made me sign those hospital logs!”

“That’s a lie!” Patricia screamed, turning on Holly with her claws out. “You’re the one who found the offshore bank account in the Caymans! You took thirty thousand dollars from my son’s advance!”

“Silence!” Judge Montgomery roared.

Colin, realizing that his life was shattering into a million unrecoverable pieces, suddenly panicked. Forgetful of his wheelchair, forgetful of his fake paralysis, and forgetful of his neck collar, he kicked his legs out, threw off the footrests, stood up on his own two feet, and tried to bolt toward the side exit of the courtroom.

The sight of the ‘paralyzed’ man sprinting across the carpeted floor caused several observers in the gallery to shout out in shock.

Before Colin reached the door, two heavy-set federal marshals tackled him to the ground, pinning his arms behind his back and clicking steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Colin lay face-down on the blue carpet, hyperventilating, his tailored suit jacket torn at the shoulder.

As the marshals pulled him to his feet, Colin looked across the room at me. His eyes were wide, wet with tears of terror, begging for mercy from the woman he had spent seven months mocking and exploiting.

“Natalie!” Colin sobbed, his voice echoing pathetically off the high ceilings. “Natalie, please! Tell them it’s a mistake! Think of Nathan and Lily! If I go to prison, what happens to the kids?!”

I stood at the back rail, my hands folded calmly in front of my wool coat. I looked him dead in the eye—the man who had let our daughter weep, who had let me exhaust my health for his greed.

“Nathan and Lily already have a mother who loves them, Colin,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the room. “And starting today, they will never have to pay for your lies again.”

The marshals dragged Colin out through the side holding door, his boots scraping helplessly against the floorboards. Patricia was escorted out behind him in handcuffs, weeping hysterically, followed by a silent, terrified Holly Price.

Evelyn Mercer turned to me, wrapping a supportive arm around my shoulders.

“It’s over, Natalie,” she said softly.

I looked out the high windows of the courtroom. The autumn rain had finally stopped, and a bright, clear beam of afternoon sunlight was cutting through the clouds, illuminating the marble floor beneath my feet.
