Chapter 5 - The Web Closes In

Wednesday morning, 6:00 AM.

The sun had barely broken over the horizon when I moved into action.

I didn't drink the water beside my bed. Instead, I carefully drew a sample of the poisoned liquid into a sterile glass vial I pulled from my architectural model-making kit, sealed it inside a Ziploc bag, and hid it in my purse. Then I dumped the rest of the water down the bathroom sink.

I woke Lacey up gently, dressed her in her warm winter coat, and packed her backpack with two weeks' worth of clothes, her favorite toys, and her passport.

"Mom? Where are we going so early?" she asked, rubbing her sleepy eyes.

"We are going on a fun road trip to Aunt Sarah’s house in Michigan," I whispered, smiling warmly as I kissed her cheek. "She’s waiting for you with hot cocoa and a brand-new puppy."

Sarah was my older sister—a former state prosecutor who now ran a private criminal defense firm in Detroit. She was the only person on earth I trusted with my life.

I drove Lacey straight to the regional train station in Aurora, where Sarah’s husband was already waiting on the platform. I held my daughter tight, pulled her into a long embrace, and whispered, "I love you more than the stars, Lacey. No matter what happens, Mom is going to fix everything."

"I love you too, Mom," she smiled, waving through the train window as it pulled away toward Detroit.

With my daughter miles away and completely safe from Nolan's reach, the last remaining vulnerability in my life was sealed.

By 8:30 AM, I was sitting in the high-rise downtown office of Arthur Pendelton—Chicago’s most feared corporate white-collar crime litigator and a close personal friend of my late father.

Arthur sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his thick silver eyebrows furrowed in utter disbelief as he played the video files on his widescreen monitor.

On the screen, Nolan’s face showed in crisp 4K detail as he dropped the clear poison into my water glass. Then came the audio recording of Eleanor and Nolan discussing the Fairview Sanatorium, the offshore wire transfers through Vanguard Logistics, and the plan to commit me to an asylum.

"Good God, Kirsten," Arthur breathed, pushing his glasses up his nose, his voice shaking with anger. "This isn't just civil fraud or a bad divorce. This is criminal conspiracy, attempted murder by toxic administration, wire fraud, and grand larceny."

"Can they execute the proxy transfer today, Arthur?" I asked, my voice calm, cold, and razor-sharp.

Arthur smiled—a slow, terrifying smile of a apex predator who had just been handed absolute victory on a silver platter.

"They could try," Arthur purred, reaching for his telephone. "If they weren't about to be hit by a legal tactical nuke."

For the next two hours, Arthur mobilized his team.

He filed an emergency ex-parte petition with the Cook County Circuit Court for an immediate freezing of all assets associated with Halstead Enterprises and Vanguard Logistics. He contacted the Special Prosecutions Bureau of the Illinois State Police, the FBI Financial Crimes Unit, and the Department of Insurance Fraud.

"Now, Kirsten," Arthur said, leaning back in his leather chair. "Eleanor and Richard Vance are scheduled to arrive at your house at nine o'clock this morning with a notary to force you to sign those papers, correct?"

"Yes," I replied. "And Nolan is still hiding inside that wall, waiting to play his part as the 'concerned, grieving husband' if I refuse."

Arthur checked his watch. 9:15 AM.

"Then let's go home, my dear," Arthur said, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "It's time to end the spy game."
