Chapter 5 - A New Horizon

Three months later, the spring rains had given way to the bright, warm sunshine of an early Chicago June.

The legal proceedings were moving forward steadily. Richard Vance remained held without bail in the Cook County correctional facility, facing multiple felony counts of aggravated child abuse and exploitation—charges that guaranteed he would spend the rest of his life behind bars. His corporate empire had collapsed overnight as institutional investors severed ties with the Vance name, and the family estate was currently being liquidated to establish a trust fund for survivors of abuse.

Meredith’s trial was scheduled for the fall, and while her defense attorneys were pushing for a plea bargain, our divorce had already been finalized on expedited grounds, granting me sole, unencumbered custody of Chloe.

On a Saturday afternoon, the park near Lake Michigan was filled with families, children laughing on the swings, and the distant hum of sailboats gliding across the blue water.

Chloe and I sat on a wooden bench beneath a towering oak tree, sharing a box of chocolate donuts.

She swung her legs back and forth, her sneakers dangling a few inches above the grass.

— Dad? she asked, licking powdered sugar off her thumb.

— Yeah, kiddo?

— Are we ever going back to that big house?

I looked down at her, seeing the resilient spirit that had somehow survived months of terror without ever losing her core.

— No, Chloe, I said softly, wrapping my arm around her shoulders and pulling her close. We’re never going back there. We’re building our own home now. Wherever we are together, that’s where our home is.

She leaned her head against my chest, her hand resting comfortably against my arm.

— Good, she whispered. Because I like this apartment better anyway. It has better sunlight.

I smiled, looking out past the trees toward the endless expanse of the lake, sparkling brilliantly beneath the summer sky.

The past was behind us. The ghosts had been locked away. And for the first time in our lives, the road ahead was entirely our own.
