Chapter 3 - The Sixteen-Year Lie

Nathan stood frozen in Arthur’s dimly lit office, the hum of the computer monitors the only sound breaking the heavy silence. His mind struggled to process the words hanging in the air.
"What are you talking about, Arthur?" Nathan stammered, pulling a chair over and sinking into it. "Her identity? Maya was born right here in Savannah! Her father was Judge Richard Vance! I attended his funeral eight years ago!"
Arthur shook his head slowly, sliding a thick manila folder across the desk toward Nathan.
"Judge Richard Vance had one daughter, Nathan," Arthur explained, pointing at a yellowed newspaper clipping inside the folder. "Her name was Victoria Vance. In 2008—sixteen years ago—Victoria Vance was involved in a massive scandal in Atlanta. She was a licensed psychiatric nurse at a private pediatric facility who had her license permanently revoked following multiple allegations of severe Munchausen syndrome by proxy and child endangerment."
Nathan picked up the newspaper clipping with trembling hands.
The headline, printed in bold black ink, read: ATLANTA NURSE INVESTIGATED FOR SYSTEMATIC CHILD ABUSE AND IDENTITY FABRICATION.
Below the headline was a mugshot.
Despite the darker hair and lack of expensive cosmetic enhancements, the eyes staring out from the newsprint belonged undeniably to his wife.
"Victoria Vance..." Nathan whispered, reading the text line by line. "She was facing six felony counts of child cruelty and medical fraud in Fulton County. How... how is she walking around as Maya Barlow in Savannah?"
"Because sixteen years ago, right around the time you met her at that corporate charity gala in Charleston," Arthur said, pulling up a series of court dockets on his screen, "her father, Judge Vance, used his immense political clout, underground legal connections, and a massive financial settlement to quietly seal her criminal records in Atlanta."
Arthur tapped the screen. "Victoria Vance vanished. Her father helped her forge a completely new legal identity under the name 'Maya Vance,' wiping her real medical background clean, fabricating a fake degree from an out-of-state design school, and scrubbing her connection to the Atlanta pediatric scandal."
Nathan felt as if the floor beneath his feet had suddenly dissolved into an endless, dark abyss.
Sixteen years.
He had been married to this woman for sixteen years. He had built a life with her, shared his bed with her, trusted her with his finances, and worst of all, trusted her with the life of his innocent daughter. Every story she had ever told him about her childhood, her education, her past relationships—it was all a meticulously constructed illusion designed to conceal a dangerous, predatory sociopath.
"Why didn't you tell me this before, Arthur?" Nathan asked, looking up at his neighbor, his voice filled with raw pain.
"Because until three months ago, Nathan, I had no idea," Arthur said honestly, his eyes filled with guilt. "I only started looking into Maya’s background because of something I saw on my security cameras back in November."
Arthur brought up another video file, timestamped November 14th of the previous year—another week when Nathan had been out of town on business.
"Look at this," Arthur said.
The video showed a sleek black sedan pulling into the Barlow driveway at 11:00 PM. A tall man in a dark coat got out of the car. Maya opened the front door, embraced the man intimately, and led him inside. He didn't leave the house until 5:00 AM the following morning.
"She was cheating on me?" Nathan muttered, a bitter, hollow laugh escaping his lips. At this point, infidelity seemed almost trivial compared to the monster sitting in his living room.
"It’s worse than an affair, Nathan," Arthur said grimly. "I ran the license plate on that black sedan through a private investigator friend of mine. The car belongs to a man named Dr. Julian Mercer."
Nathan blinked. "Dr. Mercer? Lily’s pediatrician?!"
"Yes," Arthur confirmed, clicking on another document. "Dr. Julian Mercer was one of the attending physicians at the Atlanta facility sixteen years ago—the same facility where Victoria Vance lost her nursing license. He was her co-conspirator back then, Nathan. They were quietly altering medical records and over-medicating children to bill insurance companies for millions."
The pieces of the terrifying puzzle suddenly snapped together in Nathan’s mind with horrifying precision.
The pink medicine Maya had been giving Lily. The way Lily had been perpetually sick, lethargic, and complaining of stomach aches every time Nathan went on business trips over the last year. The sudden, mysterious "developmental delays" Dr. Mercer had diagnosed Lily with six months ago, prescribing expensive, heavy sedative medications that Nathan had questioned.
Maya wasn't just abusing Lily out of explosive rage.
She and Dr. Mercer were systematically sickening seven-year-old Lily, fabricating medical conditions, and setting the stage to declare Lily "permanently disabled" or mentally unstable—all while milking a massive private family trust fund that Judge Vance had set up for Lily’s care before he died!
"My God..." Nathan covered his face with both hands, his chest heaving as he sobbed quietly. "She’s been poisoning my daughter. She’s been poisoning Lily..."
"You have her now, Nathan," Arthur said firmly, grabbing Nathan by the shoulders and shaking him gently. "You have the video of the assault from Tuesday. You have her real identity files. You have the connection to Mercer. She thinks she’s invisible because of her father’s legacy, but you hold the hammer now."
Nathan wiped his eyes, standing up straight. The confusion, the shock, and the grief evaporated from his chest, replaced by an ironclad, absolute resolve.
"Arthur," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a register colder than ice. "Can you download every single video file, every background record, and every camera feed onto an encrypted drive for me right now?"
"Already done, son," Arthur said, handing him a sleek silver flash drive. "What are you going to do?"

Nathan took the drive, gripping it tightly in his fist.
"I'm going to tear her kingdom down to the ground."
