Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE OF SHADOWS

By 2:00 PM, a convoy of four police cruisers, a forensic van, and Detective Rodriguez’s unmarked vehicle pulled up to the curb of 442 Hawthorne Ridge Lane.

I sat in the front seat of Rodriguez’s car, having refused to stay behind at the station. Emily was safely resting at my sister’s house under police protection, but I needed to be here. I needed to find Rebecca.

Grant Mercer’s silver SUV was still parked in the driveway.

As the officers pulled their weapons, took positions around the perimeter, and approached the front door, Detective Rodriguez knocked heavily on the solid oak entryway.

“Police department! Search warrant! Open the door!”

No one answered.

“Breach it,” Rodriguez ordered.

An officer stepped forward with a heavy steel battering ram. Three violent blows shattered the custom lock, and the heavy oak door swung wide open with a loud bang.

“Police! Clear the house!”

Officers flooded into the foyer with drawn handguns. I followed closely behind Rodriguez, my senses heightened to a terrifying degree.

The house was immaculate, smelling faintly of citrus polish and expensive leather, but the atmosphere was suffocating. In the kitchen, an unfinished glass of wine sat on the counter beside a broken picture frame—the glass shattered, showing a photo of Rebecca and Emily taken last summer at the beach.

“Downstairs! Search the basement!” Rodriguez commanded.

We moved down a set of carpeted stairs leading into a fully finished basement—a luxury home theater, a wine cellar, and a private office space.

“Check the walls! Check for hidden rooms!” I urged, my mind recalling Grant’s construction background. When he renovated the house two years ago, he had hired specialized contractors to install an underground storm shelter and safe room.

A forensic officer swept an infrared thermal camera across the wooden paneling of the wine cellar.

“Detective! Over here!” the officer shouted. “There’s a density gap behind this display rack!”

I rushed forward. Behind a tall rack holding dozens of dust-covered wine bottles was a discreet, electronic keypad hidden inside a fake electrical outlet box.

“He changed the code,” I said, looking at the blinking red light.

Rodriguez didn't hesitate. She signaled the breach team. An officer brought forward a hydraulic tactical spreader, wedging the steel jaws into the frame behind the wine rack. With a sickening groan of tearing metal and splintering wood, the hidden door popped open.

A dark, cold concrete staircase revealed itself, leading deep beneath the house.

“Rebecca!” I screamed, pushing past the officers and barreling down the dark stairs.

“Ethan, wait! Stay behind us!” Rodriguez shouted, but nothing on earth could have stopped me.

At the bottom of the stairs was a small, soundproofed safe room. The concrete walls were cold, illuminated only by a single hanging lightbulb.

And there, sitting on a metal cot in the corner, her hands zip-tied behind her back, her face bruised and pale, was my ex-wife.

“Ethan?” Rebecca gasped, her voice raspy and choked with tears as she looked up.

“Rebecca!” I rushed to her side, dropping to my knees, taking her trembling body in my arms as Rodriguez quickly used tactical shears to cut the heavy zip-ties from her wrists.

“Ethan... oh God, Ethan!” Rebecca sobbed, collapsing against my chest, her body shaking hysterically. “Is Emily okay?! Did he hurt her?! Tell me she’s safe!”

“She’s safe, Rebecca. I found her. She’s with my sister right now. She’s safe,” I wept, holding her tightly, resting my forehead against hers.

Rebecca let out a long, shuddering breath, her eyes wide with terror. “He... he was going to move me tonight, Ethan. He has a private plane waiting at a regional airfield in Zanesville. He’s liquidating all the dealership accounts... he was going to take me out of the country!”

“Where is he, Rebecca?” Rodriguez asked sharply, kneeling beside us. “Where is Grant right now?”

Rebecca looked at the wall clock hanging near the cot, her eyes widening in realization.

“He left twenty minutes ago,” Rebecca whispered, her voice trembling. “He realized you were onto him. He’s heading to the Zanesville airfield right now to take the private jet!”
