Part 2: The Truth Mark Buried for Ten Years

Mark stared at the X-ray screen as if he had seen a ghost.

His lips trembled.

"Mark?" I repeated. "What did you do?"

The waiting room suddenly felt smaller. The air seemed too thin to breathe.

Dr. Pierce looked between us.

"Do you know anything about these fragments?" he asked.

Mark lowered himself into a chair. His face had gone completely white.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered, "I never meant for this to happen."

A cold wave rushed through me.

"What are you talking about?"

He buried his face in his hands.

"When Emily was fourteen months old, I took her to my brother's garage."

The memory flashed through my mind instantly.

Emily screaming.

Mark insisting she had simply fallen.

The unexplained fever that followed days later.

"You told me she slipped from a chair," I said.

"I lied."

The words hit me harder than any punch.

Mark began to cry.

His voice shook as he continued.

"My brother and I were repairing old machinery. Emily was sitting nearby. One of the metal components exploded when we tried to cut it open."

Dr. Pierce's expression darkened.

Mark nodded miserably.

"Tiny metal fragments flew everywhere. Emily started screaming. One piece cut her leg, but I thought that was all."

"You never took her to a doctor?" I asked.

Mark closed his eyes.

"My brother convinced me not to. He said she'd be fine. He said telling anyone could get us sued because we weren't following safety regulations."

I could barely believe what I was hearing.

"So you hid it?"

"I was terrified."

Years of unanswered questions suddenly rearranged themselves inside my mind.

The infections.

The pain.

The mysterious symptoms.

All of it.

Dr. Pierce folded his arms.

"Several fragments appear to have migrated through tissue over time," he explained. "It's rare, but it can happen. They likely caused repeated inflammation and infection."

I felt tears running down my face.

Ten years.

My daughter had suffered for ten years.

Because of a secret.

Mark looked at me with desperate eyes.

"I know I failed her. I know I failed both of you."

I couldn't answer.

At that moment, a nurse entered.

"Emily is awake."

Without another word, I followed her.
