Chapter 6 - The New Drawing

Three months later.
Christmas Eve had arrived at the Moretti estate on the Upper East Side.
Outside, a soft, fluffy blanket of fresh snow covered the streets of Manhattan. Inside the grand foyer, a magnificent twenty-foot pine tree stood decorated with gold ribbons, glowing white lights, and hundreds of sparkling crystal ornaments.
The house was no longer quiet.
Laughter echoed down the wide marble hallways. The smell of roasted turkey, cinnamon, and fresh gingerbread filled the warm air.
In the grand living room, a roaring fire crackled in the wide stone fireplace.
My mother sat in a comfortable wheelchair near the Christmas tree, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, happily watching Lily unwrap a giant box containing a wooden dollhouse.
I sat on the soft leather sofa, wearing a dark green velvet dress, a glass of champagne in my hand.
Dominic sat beside me. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket or his tie. He wore a dark wool sweater with his sleeves pushed up, his arm wrapped comfortably around my waist, pulling me close against his chest.
His gold signet ring glinted in the warm firelight.
"You look beautiful tonight, Clara," Dominic whispered into my ear, his lips brushing against my temple, sending a delicious shiver down my spine.
"I still can't believe this is real," I admitted, resting my head against his shoulder. "A year ago, I was scrubbing the tiles in the pantry, wondering how I was going to pay for my mother's medicine."
"And now," Dominic smiled, kissing my forehead softly, "you're the mistress of this house."
"Mommy! Look!"
Lily came running across the Persian rug, holding a fresh piece of paper and a box of crayons. She slid onto the sofa between Dominic and me, proudly displaying her latest masterpiece.
I looked down at the paper.
This time, there was no blue car. There were no dark figures in the trees.
The drawing showed four stick figures standing in front of a giant house with a Christmas tree inside.
One tall stick figure wearing a black sweater had a giant yellow heart drawn on his chest. Beside him stood a figure with long brown hair, holding hands with a little girl in strawberry socks. And sitting in a wheelchair beside them was a grandmother wearing a gold crown.
Dominic took the paper from Lily, looking at it with a quiet, profound awe that softened every hard edge of his face.
"Is this for me, Lily?" Dominic asked gently.
"Yes," Lily beamed, pointing her tiny finger at the tall figure. "That's you, Dominic. You're Mommy's boyfriend now."
Dominic laughed—a rich, booming sound that filled the room with pure joy. He leaned down, picked Lily up in his arms, and lifted her high into the air as she giggled with delight.
"Not just her boyfriend, sweetheart," Dominic said, looking over at me with eyes full of deep, eternal love.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out a small velvet box, and opened it to reveal a dazzling, flawless diamond ring that caught the golden light of the fireplace.
I gasped, my hands flying to my mouth as tears of pure happiness filled my eyes.
"Clara," Dominic whispered, setting Lily down and dropping to one knee on the rug before me. "Will you make me the happiest man in New York? Will you be my wife?"
I didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Yes," I wept, throwing my arms around his neck as he slid the ring onto my finger. "Yes, Dominic! A thousand times yes!"

My mother clapped her hands in delight from her wheelchair, and Lily jumped up and down on the sofa, cheering happily.
Dominic pulled me close, pressing his lips to mine in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed our future forever—a future built not on fear or shadows, but on love, protection, and a family that could never be broken again.
