Chapter 1: The Shattered Illusion

Alexander stood frozen in the marble foyer, his long black trench coat still half-buttoned. The silence that settled over the living room was deafening.
For months, he had convinced himself that his millions were buying Ethan the perfect recovery. He paid Dr. Harrison—the top pediatric orthopedic specialist in the country—ten thousand dollars a month. Yet, here was his son, sweaty, exhausted, holding a dusty rag, and leaning on a housemaid instead of his high-priced medical team.
"Ethan," Alexander’s voice cracked across the room like a whip. "What is going on here?"
Sophia immediately stood up, instinctively stepping between the billionaire and the little boy. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her gaze remained steady. "Mr. Hayes, Ethan was just—"
"I am speaking to my son, Sophia," Alexander interrupted, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble. He strode into the room, his expensive leather shoes clicking sharply against the hardwood. He knelt in front of Ethan, his face a mask of controlled fury. "Ethan, where is Nurse Evelyn? Where is your physical therapist?"
Ethan shrank back slightly, his small hands gripping his purple crutches tighter. "They... they left an hour ago, Daddy. Nurse Evelyn said she had an appointment. Dr. Harrison hasn't come since last Tuesday."
Alexander felt a cold dread sink into his stomach. Last Tuesday? He paid for daily visits.
Before he could process the betrayal, his phone buzzed in his pocket. It was a Google Alert. He pulled it out, and his breath caught. A tabloid headline flashed across his screen: "Billionaire Alexander Hayes Abandons Crippled Son to Maid While Chasing Mergers." Accompanying the article was a grainy, paparazzi photo taken through the mansion’s glass conservatory just yesterday, showing Sophia holding Ethan as he practiced standing.
Alexander’s world tilted. His privacy had been breached. His son was being exposed. And the woman standing in front of him was the only outsider with access.
"Did you do this?" Alexander whispered, standing up to face Sophia, his eyes burning with accusation as he held up the phone. "Is this why you've been playing hero with my son? For a payout from the media? Or maybe something bigger?"
Sophia’s face drained of color. "What? No! Mr. Hayes, I would never—"
"Pack your bags," Alexander cut her off, the grief and paranoia blinding his judgment. "You are fired. Get out of my house before I have the police escort you."
"Daddy, no!" Ethan cried out, tears instantly bursting from his blue eyes. He tried to take a step forward to grab Sophia's hand, but his weak left leg buckled.
"Ethan!" Sophia gasped, lunging forward to catch him before he hit the floor.
But Alexander was faster. He scooped his son into his arms, pushing Sophia away. "Don't touch him," he growled.
As Sophia stood there, her eyes welling with tears of innocence and heartbreak, she looked at the little boy who had become her whole world. "I didn't do it, Ethan," she whispered softly. "I promise." Then, turning to Alexander with a dignity that defied her status, she said, "You think your money protects him, Mr. Hayes. But you're so busy guarding your wealth that you aren't seeing who the real monsters are."

She turned and walked away, her footsteps echoing down the long, empty hallway.
Ethan sobbed uncontrollably into his father's shoulder, screaming for his Tia Sophia. For the first time in years, Alexander held his son close, but instead of comfort, the mansion felt colder than it ever had since Amelia died.
