Chapter 4 - The Greenhouse Confession

The screech of the iron hinges tearing against the damp stone frame echoed like a gunshot in the enclosed space of the greenhouse.
Isabella screamed, stumbling backward into a rack of dead potted ferns. Marco spun around with lightning reflexes, his hand instantly dropping toward his shoulder holster.
"Don't," Aleandro said.
The single word carried the weight of an executioner's axe. It wasn't loud, but it froze Marco mid-motion. The barrel of Aleandro’s Sig Sauer was already leveled dead-center at Marco’s chest, held with terrifying, absolute steadiness.
Marco’s hand hovered inches from his weapon, his dark eyes wide as he assessed the geometry of the room. He knew better than to test him. Against Aleandro in a draw, hesitation meant a bullet through the heart.
"Boss..." Marco breathed, his voice tightening. "I can explain."
"Can you?" Aleandro asked, his voice chillingly calm as he stepped inside the greenhouse, the scent of damp earth and rotting leaves washing over him. He didn't look at Marco. His dark gaze locked entirely onto Isabella.
She was trembling violently, wrapped in her coat, her face stained with tears, looking like a cornered animal awaiting the final blow.
"Aleandro..." she choked out, sliding down the side of the wooden bench until she hit the cold concrete floor. "Please... I didn't want to. God help me, I didn't want to."
"You bugged my office," Aleandro said, every syllable dropping like lead weights into the silence. "You let the federal government wiretap my family home. You traded my trust for your brother's life."
"They were going to kill him!" she wailed, covering her face with her hands, her shoulders shaking with agonizing sobs. "What would you have done if it was your sister? If someone put a gun to her head and told you to choose between your empire and her breath? You would have burned the whole world down to save her, Alex! Don't act like you wouldn't!"
The words hit Aleandro with the force of a physical blow.
His sister.
The ghost he never let anyone touch. The wound that still bled beneath his armor.
He lowered the gun slightly, just a fraction of an inch, his jaw working as he fought a war inside his own mind. He knew what it meant to love someone enough to destroy everything else. He had built his entire criminal empire on the ashes of people who had threatened his family.
And yet...
"And you lied to me for three years," Aleandro whispered, the pain in his voice cutting deeper than any anger ever could. "Every breakfast. Every dinner. Every night when you held me in the dark. It was all a countdown until you found the right moment to hand me over."
"I loved you," she sobbed, looking up at him with tear-drowned eyes, her heart breaking in real time. "That was the part they didn't calculate. They thought I was just an asset. But I fell in love with a monster who treated me like a queen. And it killed me every single day."
Marco slowly lifted his hands away from his holster, realizing the gunfight he had braced for wasn't coming—at least, not the kind involving lead. The real destruction was happening behind Aleandro's impenetrable eyes.
"Boss," Marco said quietly, breaking the silence. "The federal task force has an extraction team waiting at Pier 44 for tomorrow night. They think Isabella is bringing them the physical flash drive with the shipping ledgers. If we don't move, they'll move on us first."
Aleandro didn't blink. He stared down at the woman he was supposed to marry, seeing not a traitor, but a ghost of the life he had foolishly allowed himself to imagine.
"Get up, Izzy," Aleandro said, his voice hard, flat, drained of all warmth.

She looked up, terrified. "What... what are you going to do with me?"
"You wanted to save your brother?" Aleandro turned his back on her, walking toward the open door of the greenhouse. "Then wipe your eyes. Because tomorrow night, we're going to give the federal government exactly what they asked for—and we're going to rewrite the rules of the game."
