Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Threshold

The silence in Romano’s restaurant felt dense enough to cut with a butcher’s knife. Every breath, every shift of fabric against leather booths, seemed magnified a thousandfold. Vincent Torino remained crouched on the polished tile floor, his large hands resting gently on Sophie’s trembling shoulders. The small girl’s breath came in ragged, burning gasps, her fingers still anchored in the expensive wool of his jacket.

"Where is your mama, Sophie?" Vincent asked again. His voice was low, controlled, but beneath the surface lay the terrifying hum of a loaded engine.

Sophie pointed a shaking, dirt-streaked finger toward the heavy mahogany exit doors that led out into the alleyway behind the block. "The apartments. Above the bakery. Two men... they came in through the window. They broke the lamp. Mama told me to run out the back, but when I looked back... she wasn't moving."

Vincent stood up slowly. The fluid grace of his movement sent a wave of nervous tension rippling through the room. The waiters, the maître d', the wealthy patrons three tables down—they all shrank back, sensing that the air pressure in the room had fundamentally changed.

He reached inside his tailored jacket, his hand wrapping around the grip of the custom 1911 pistol holstered against his ribs. He didn't pull it. He didn't need to. The mere suggestion of the gesture was enough to make the restaurant manager press himself flat against the service station wall.

"Luigi," Vincent called out without turning his head.

A heavy-set man in a sharply pressed gray suit detached himself from the shadows near the kitchen doors, moving with surprising speed. "Boss?"

"Take the girl," Vincent instructed, his tone chillingly absolute. "Get her to Dr. Moretti. Keep her safe. No one touches her. No one talks to her. If a fly lands on her wrong, I want to know about it before it hits the ground."

"Consider it done," Luigi said, stepping forward and gently scooping Sophie into his arms. The little girl whimpered, burying her face against Luigi's wide chest.

Vincent didn't watch them leave. His eyes were fixed on the front window, where the rain had begun to streak the glass with long, watery trails. The date that was supposed to redefine his life—the blind date with Elena, the woman his sister swore would bring light into his dark world—was gone. In her place was an invasion, a violation, and an act of extreme, unprovoked violence.

Whoever had sent those men to Elena’s apartment hadn’t just attacked a woman. They had stepped directly into Vincent Torino’s path.

He walked out of Romano's into the damp night air, his mind calculating angles, debts, and bloodlines with terrifying clarity. There were three families in this city who thought they shared the throne with him. Tonight, one of them was about to learn why they should have stayed kneeling.
