Chapter 3 - The Penthouse Secret

The private penthouse atop the Grand Astoria was a sanctuary suspended in the clouds. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls offered a panoramic view of the glittering Manhattan skyline, while the interior was a masterclass in minimalist luxury—warm walnut wood, plush white leather sofas, and a crackling stone fireplace that cast a gentle, amber glow across the room.

Lily was fast asleep on one of the oversized sofas, wrapped in a cashmere throw blanket that was worth more than Elena’s monthly rent. The one-eyed stuffed rabbit rested securely in her tiny arms.

Elena sat on the edge of a velvet armchair, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. She wore a simple gray cardigan over her black staff uniform, feeling entirely out of place amidst the multi-million-dollar art pieces and designer furnishings.

Across from her, standing by the bar, Adrian poured two glasses of amber scotch, though he didn't drink. He walked over, set one glass on the marble coffee table near Elena, and sat down on the opposite sofa.

“You don't have to be afraid of me, Elena,” Adrian said, noticing the way her shoulders were pulled up to her ears.

“Mr. Voss... Adrian,” she corrected herself hastily, looking down at her shoes. “I... I still don't understand what happened downstairs. Why did you do that? You humiliated yourself in front of your entire board of directors. You threw away an engagement to a woman from one of the most powerful families in the city.”

Adrian let out a dark, humorless chuckle. He took a slow sip of his scotch, his slate-gray eyes reflecting the firelight.

“Power,” Adrian muttered. “That’s all the Whitmore family has ever cared about. Do you think I was blind to who Celeste really was, Elena? I knew she was selfish. I knew she was superficial. In my world, marriages are business mergers. You sign the contract, you tolerate the flaws, and you keep the shareholders happy.”

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his expression turning grim.

“But tonight... tonight opened my eyes to something I’ve been ignoring for months. Two weeks ago, my internal compliance team flagged a series of unauthorized offshore transfers originating from the Whitmore Foundation—transfers that were being funneled directly into accounts controlled by Celeste’s father.”

Elena’s eyes widened. “Embezzlement?”

“Worse,” Adrian replied darkly. “Industrial espionage. They were planning a hostile takeover of my shipping logistics division by leaking proprietary routing data to our primary overseas competitor. The wedding was supposed to be the final step—once we were married, her father would have had automatic voting rights on my board.”

Elena stared at him, the pieces of the puzzle suddenly clicking into place. “And when Celeste humiliated Lily... it wasn't just about my daughter’s dress, was it? It was the final straw.”

“No,” Adrian said softly, looking across the coffee table straight into Elena’s dark, luminous eyes. “When Celeste looked down at your daughter with such pure, unadulterated malice... I saw what kind of monster I was about to invite into my home. If she could treat a terrified three-year-old child like trash because of what she wore, imagine what she would have done to anyone who stood in her way once she had her hands on my empire.”

He stood up, walking slowly around the table until he stopped right in front of her chair.

“Lily reminded me of what real humanity looks like,” Adrian continued, his voice dropping into a low, compelling rumble. “She walked into a room full of sharks, saw a chandelier, and smiled. She didn't care about money, status, or power. She just saw magic.”

Elena looked up, her breath hitching as Adrian knelt down on one knee so he was eye-level with her.

“Stay here, Elena,” Adrian whispered. “Not as my employee. Not as a maid. Stay here in this penthouse. Let me give Lily the home she deserves. And... give me a chance to show you what it feels like to be treated like a queen instead of a ghost.”

Before Elena could form a single coherent sentence, the private elevator chime chimed softly from the foyer.

Adrian stood up instantly, his face hardening back into the expression of a lethal corporate warlord.

Marcus, the head of security, stepped out of the elevator, looking grim as he clutched a secure encrypted tablet.

“Boss,” Marcus said urgently, glancing briefly at Elena before looking back at Adrian. “You need to see this. The Whitmores aren't going down quietly. They’ve just filed an emergency injunction with the state court—and they’re using your own staff payroll logs to claim you’re mentally unstable and unfit to run Voss Global.”

Adrian’s eyes flared with a dangerous, icy fire. “On what grounds?”

“On the grounds,” Marcus swallowed hard, “that you just fired your fiancée and brought your cleaning woman and her child into your private penthouse at midnight. They’re claiming it’s evidence of a severe psychological breakdown.”
