Chapter 3 - The Broken Mechanism

The room felt as though it were spinning. Eleanor stared at the tiny blue pills in Leo’s hand, her stomach churning with a mix of betrayal and terror.

"Why?" she choked out, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes. "Why would my own father do that to me? He loves me! He spent millions on my treatments, on therapists, on—"

"Because of what you witnessed in his library when you were ten years old," Leo interrupted gently. "You didn't just see them fight. You saw where William stored the illegal shipping ledgers—the ones proving his entire wealth was built on smuggling seized artifacts and black-market arms. You threatened to tell your mother. When he tried to stop you, you fell down the marble stairs. You hit your head, and you lost your memory of that night."

Leo leaned closer, his voice dropping to an intense, steady whisper.

"William realized that if your memory ever returned, his entire empire would crumble. He couldn't kill his own daughter—he’s not a complete monster. So he did the next best thing. He brought in corrupt doctors, kept you drugged enough to block your nerve pathways and fog your long-term memory, and turned you into a helpless ornament he could protect and control forever."

"No... no, it can't be..." Eleanor covered her face with her hands, her shoulders shaking violently as tears broke through her defenses.

For seven years, she had blamed herself. She had believed her own mind was weak, that her body was defective, that her mother had found her broken and unlovable and decided to walk away into the dark. All those nights spent crying into her pillow, all those humiliating physical therapy sessions where she tried with all her strength to wiggle a single toe, only to fail—it had all been a orchestrated lie constructed by the man who kissed her forehead every night before bed.

Leo reached out and gently laid his hand over her trembling fingers. His touch was warm, rough, and solid—a striking contrast to the cold, antiseptic reality she had lived in for so long.

"I promised your mother I would come back for you when I was strong enough," Leo said quietly. "It took me seven years to trace where William hid the original documents and to find out what kind of drug he was giving you. Tonight was my only chance to reach you before he moved you out of the country."

"Moved me?" Eleanor raised her eyes, wide with panic. "What do you mean?"

"William knows people are asking questions about his foundation," Leo explained. "He’s arranged to transfer you to a private sanatorium in Switzerland next week. Once you’re there, you will never come back."

Heavy footsteps echoed down the grand corridor outside her bedroom door. The distinct, slow click of polished leather shoes approached.

"Eleanor?" William’s voice called out from the hallway. "Are you still awake, darling? I thought I heard voices."

"He's coming," Eleanor whispered, terror seizing her heart.

Leo looked around the room quickly. There was no closet big enough, and the window was wide open.

"Flush those pills down the bathroom drain," Leo commanded softly, backing toward the windowsill. "Don't take them tonight, or ever again. In three days, as the drug leaves your system, your legs will feel like they are burning. It will hurt, Eleanor. It will feel like needles sinking into your skin. Do not panic—that is your nerves waking up."

"When will I see you again?" she begged, grasping his wrist.

"Meet me at the boathouse on Friday at midnight," Leo said, his eyes burning with an unshakeable promise. "I’ll bring the key to the mahogany box. We get the evidence, and I get you out of this house forever."

With a quick, silent movement, Leo slipped out the window, disappearing down the trellises into the rainy darkness just as the heavy brass handle of Eleanor's bedroom door began to turn.
