Chapter 4 - The Live-Stream Execution

The green room of the NBS television studio was tight and clinical. Outside, the halls were buzzing with excitement. The primetime show Inside Manhattan had landed the exclusive interview with Vanessa Brooks, who promised to expose the "fraudulent truth behind the Sinclair Gala incident."
Richard Sterling had spared no expense. He had hired the city's most ruthless public relations fixer to coach Vanessa. She sat in the studio makeup chair, wearing a conservative, high-necked navy blue dress, her makeup designed to make her look pale, exhausted, and deeply wronged.
"Remember, Vanessa," the fixer whispered in her ear. "You are the victim of a coordinated digital hit job. The waitress was aggressive. She threatened you. You were merely defending yourself, and Nathan Sinclair used his massive wealth to bully a female influencer to protect his mother's bizarre publicity stunt. Keep crying. The public loves a fallen angel if she cries enough."
Vanessa nodded, a cold, venomous confidence returning to her chest. She looked at the monitor. The live broadcast was starting in three minutes.
What Vanessa didn't know was that two floors above her, in the network executive suite, Nathan Sinclair was sitting with the CEO of NBS Networkâa man whose media conglomerate relied heavily on the Sinclair Foundation's multi-million dollar advertising partnerships.
"Are you sure you want to let this broadcast run, Nathan?" the network CEO asked nervously. "We can kill it right now."
"No," Nathan said, a dangerous smile touching his lips as he watched the monitor. "Let her speak. Let her dig the grave as deep as she possibly can. The fall is much more spectacular when they think theyâre winning."
Beside Nathan, Leah sat quietly, her appearance transformed. She wore a sharp, tailored black blazer, her hair styled elegantly, looking every bit the high-level corporate executive she had officially become hours ago. She held a flash drive in her handâthe weapon Nathanâs cybersecurity team had prepared.
The red light on the studio camera clicked on. The anchor, a sharp-tongued journalist named Sarah Jenkins, faced the camera.
"Good evening. Tonight, we bring you an exclusive interview with Vanessa Brooks, the socialite at the center of the viral storm that has captivated the internet. Vanessa, thank you for being here."
"Thank you, Sarah," Vanessa said, her voice instantly trembling as a perfect, practiced tear rolled down her cheek. "Iâve stayed silent for the past twenty-four hours while my life, my career, and my charity work have been utterly destroyed by a digital mob. But tonight, I need to tell the truth. The incident at the gala was a setup."
The anchor leaned in. "A setup? Can you elaborate?"
"The young woman, Leah Miller, was not a simple waitress," Vanessa claimed boldly, looking directly into the camera lens with righteous indignation. "We have reason to believe she was hired by a rival organization to infiltrate the gala and provoke a confrontation. She was aggressive with me from the start. When I tried to handle the situation discreetly, she screamed at me, creating a scene. Mr. Sinclair then used his immense power to humiliate me publicly to fulfill his motherâs strange social experiment. I am a victim of corporate bullying, Sarah. My career has been taken from me because I tried to enforce security protocols."
The live chat on the screen began to flicker wildly. Some users were starting to doubt. âWait, is this true?â âDid the waitress fake it?â âThe Sinclairs are powerful enough to do this.â
Richard Sterling, watching from his private office, smiled, taking a drag from his cigar. "Perfect," he muttered.
Back in the studio, Sarah Jenkins received a sudden message through her earpiece. Her expression sharpened. She looked up at the control room, then back at Vanessa.
"Vanessa, we have a breaking development," Sarah said, her voice dropping its sympathetic tone. "We have just been informed that representatives from the Sinclair Foundation, including the Executive Director of Community Relations, Leah Miller, are currently in our building. They have requested the right of immediate rebuttal under the networkâs fairness doctrine. And they have brought evidence."
Vanessaâs face froze. The pale makeup suddenly looked translucent. "What? No, this is my exclusive interviewâ"
"Bring them out," Sarah ordered.
The studio doors opened. Nathan Sinclair walked out first, his presence instantly dominating the room. Behind him stepped Leah Miller. The cameramen quickly shifted their angles, capturing the dramatic confrontation live.
"Mr. Sinclair, Ms. Miller, welcome," Sarah said, gesturing to the chairs opposite Vanessa.
Vanessa scrambled to maintain her composure, her eyes darting frantically to her fixer in the wings, but the fixer was already backing toward the exit.
"Ms. Brooks has just claimed that the incident was a coordinated setup, and that Ms. Miller was an aggressive instigator," Sarah explained. "What is your response?"
Nathan didn't look at Vanessa. He looked directly at the main camera. "I don't argue with liars, Sarah. I provide facts. Leah, please."
Leah stepped forward and handed the flash drive to the technical director. "What you are about to see is the unedited, full security footage from the Grand Plazaâs internal security systemânot the clipped version from social media. It includes the fifteen minutes leading up to the confrontation."
The monitor behind them flashed to life. The footage showed Vanessa Brooks standing near the VIP lounge with Reginald Vance and two other socialites. The audio was crystal clear, captured by a high-directional microphone near the catering station.
Vanessaâs voice echoed through the studio: âLook at that disgusting old woman touching the ice sculptures. She smells like a homeless shelter. Letâs have some fun. Reginald, record this. Iâm going to make her cry before I have security throw her into the street.â
The footage then showed Vanessa approaching Margaret Sinclair, intentionally knocking a glass of red wine onto Margaretâs linen dress, and laughing in her face. It showed Margaret apologizing gently, only for Vanessa to grab her arm roughly, snarling, âGet your filthy hands off me, you old parasite. You don't belong in the same zip code as this room.â
And then, it showed Leah stepping in, physically placing herself between Vanessa and the elderly woman, her voice calm and firm: âMa'am, please let her go. You are hurting her. If you have a problem with a guest, speak to management, but do not touch her.â
The studio went dead silent. The live stream comments section exploded into a nuclear winter of absolute condemnation for Vanessa.
> @TruthSeeker: "Oh my god, she didn't just insult her, she assaulted an old lady!" > @ManhattanDaily: "Vanessa Brooks just committed career suicide live on national TV." > @SinclairFan: "Leah is an absolute queen. She was so polite while Vanessa was being a demon."
Vanessa sat completely paralyzed, her mouth open, the sweat washing away her carefully applied foundation. "That... that was edited... thatâs notâ"
"But we aren't finished," Leah said, her voice ringing out with a powerful, unyielding authority. She pulled up a second document on the screen. "This is a record of a wire transfer made at 4:30 AM today from an offshore account owned by Sterling Global into Vanessa Brooksâ personal checking account in the amount of five hundred thousand dollars. The memo line was listed as 'Consulting Fees.' This was the price of her lie tonight."
The anchor gasped openly. "A bribe from Richard Sterling?"
May you like
Nathan stood up, fixing his gaze on the trembling influencer. "As of ten minutes ago, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York has issued federal subpoenas for both Vanessa Brooks and Richard Sterling for corporate espionage, market manipulation, and criminal conspiracy. Vanessa... your interview is over. Your legal nightmare has just begun."
Vanessa burst into hysterical sobs, burying her face in her hands as the cameras continued to roll, capturing every second of her ultimate, irreversible destruction.
