Chapter 4 - The Rat in the Trap

Back at the Wellesley estate, the crystal chandeliers cast a harsh, mocking light over the wreckage of what had once been a temple of elite pretension.

The champagne stain on the marble floor had dried into a sticky, amber puddle. The shattered pieces of Cassandra’s custom gown lay discarded near the base of the grand staircase.

Jonathan Pierce paced back and forth across the living room, his tailored Italian silk shirt wrinkled, his hair disheveled, his hands trembling so violently he could barely hold a lit cigarette.

Patricia sat rigidly on an Louis XIV settee, her mink coat clutched around her like armor, staring blankly at the fireplace.

And Cassandra? Cassandra was hysterically pacing near the front doors, her smeared makeup making her look like a frantic raccoon, clutching her smartphone as she dialed emergency numbers that no longer existed for her.

“Jonathan, you have to call your lawyer!” Cassandra shrieked, her voice echoing shrilly against the stone walls. “My bank cards are locked! I tried to order an Uber to my apartment and my corporate card was declined! What do you mean we’re broke?!”

“Shut up, Cassandra!” Jonathan roared, wheeling around to face her with bloodshot, bulging eyes. “Just shut your mouth! Do you have any idea what’s happening? My CFO won't answer my calls! The federal receivers are seizing the corporate accounts! And my wife—my wife is the billionaire heiress to Ashford Global!”

Patricia gasped, clutching her pearls. “That’s impossible! Harrison Ashford’s daughter vanished from society years ago! She was a quiet, mousy little nobody who didn't even know how to set a proper dinner table!”

“She played us!” Jonathan shouted, slamming his fist against the mahogany mantelpiece. “She played us for six years! Every contract we won, every bailout that saved our skin, every expansion we made—it was all her! She wasn't living off my money; I was living off her family’s charity without even knowing it!”

The heavy oak front doors suddenly swung wide open.

Jonathan spun around, expecting federal marshals or bailiffs. Instead, three burly men in sharp black suits stepped into the foyer. They weren't law enforcement. They were private security operatives working directly for Ashford Global.

At their head walked Marcus Vance, carrying a thick leather briefcase and a stack of legal notices.

“Marcus!” Jonathan cried out, rushing forward with a pathetic, desperate grin. “Thank God! Look, Marcus, there’s been a massive misunderstanding! Rachel—my wife—she’s having a hysterical episode, she called her father, and—and they’re freezing our accounts as a joke! You need to explain to the board—.”

Marcus didn't smile. He didn't even shake Jonathan’s outstretched hand. He simply opened his briefcase and pulled out a certified notice of termination and asset forfeiture.

“There is no misunderstanding, Jonathan,” Marcus said, his voice flat and professional. “As of 12:01 AM, the Board of Directors of Pierce Meridian Capital—now wholly owned by Meridian Harbor Partners—has unanimously voted to terminate your employment for gross financial misconduct, embezzlement of employee pension funds, and securities fraud.”

Jonathan stumbled back as if he had been physically struck. “Embezzlement? Are you out of your mind?! I am the founder! I built this company!”

“You built a house of cards on top of Rachel Ashford’s capital,” Marcus corrected coldly, tossing the legal papers onto the coffee table. “And furthermore, the federal Attorney General’s office has just issued a warrant for your arrest. Federal marshals are currently fifty miles away. I’d suggest you pack a toothbrush, Jonathan. You’re going to be wearing orange for a very long time.”

Cassandra let out a piercing shriek and bolted for the front door, only to find two security guards blocking her exit.

“You can’t leave the premises, Miss Blake,” one of the guards stated calmly. “Your name is listed on the corporate subpoena for aiding and abetting white-collar financial crimes.”

Patricia stood up slowly, her face contorted with ancient, bitter fury. She pointed a trembling finger at Marcus. “You tell that ungrateful little brat Rachel that she hasn't won! We are the Pierces! We built this family on blood and reputation!”

May you like

“No, Mrs. Pierce,” Marcus said, turning toward the door. “You built your family on debt and arrogance. Rachel Ashford just decided to call the loan.”

As the security team stepped back outside into the cool New England night, leaving the trio standing alone in the hollow shell of their stolen wealth, the heavy iron gates of the estate clicked shut, locking them inside a prison of their own making.
