Chapter 4 - THE MASK COMES OFF

The room was illuminated only by the glow of the laptop screen reflecting off the brass candlestick in Meredith’s hand.
I didn't cower. I didn't back away. The sight of my daughter being dragged into that closet had burned away every ounce of fear in my body, replacing it with lethal, absolute intent.
I slowly stood up behind the desk. “Put the candlestick down, Meredith.”
Meredith took a step forward, a hysterical, bitter laugh escaping her throat. “You ruined everything, David! Everything was going according to plan! In six months, I would have had my name on the house deed. In a year, I would have had access to Caroline’s life insurance trust fund! All you had to do was ignore the stupid brat!”
My eyes narrowed into slits. “Caroline’s trust fund? How do you even know about Caroline’s life insurance?”
Caroline’s estate had been placed into a private, irrevocable trust reserved exclusively for Lily’s college education and medical care when she turned eighteen. I had never mentioned the specific details or amounts to Meredith during our courtship.
Meredith stepped closer, her face contorted in a terrifying mix of arrogance and rage. “Did you really think meeting at that garden center was an accident, David? You poor, naive fool. I’ve been tracking you for two years!”
My breath hitched. “What are you talking about?”
“Caroline wasn't just your wife,” Meredith spat, her voice rising in pitch. “Before she married you, her father was the senior partner at Vance & Associates in Chicago! My father worked for him for twenty years until your precious father-in-law fired him, ruined his reputation, and drove him to commit suicide!”
The puzzle pieces snapped together with a sickening, violent clarity.
Meredith wasn't a florist who had fallen in love with a grieving widower. She was a vengeful ghost from Caroline’s family past. She had targetted me, targetted my daughter, and engineered an entire fake romance just to infiltrate my life, destroy my family from the inside, and steal the wealth she believed her family was owed.
“You targeted a four-year-old child for revenge?” I rasped, taking a slow step around the desk.
“She has Caroline’s eyes!” Meredith shrieked, raising the heavy brass candlestick high above her head. “Every time she looks at me, I see her grandfather! I was going to send her away to a boarding school in Canada the second I got power of attorney!”
Meredith lunged forward, swinging the brass candlestick directly at my head with all her force.
I dodged to the left. The heavy brass shattered the glass frame of my appraisal license on the wall.
Before she could swing again, I grabbed her wrist, twisting it downward with ruthless strength. The candlestick clattered to the hardwood floor. I slammed her back against the office wall, pinning her shoulder with my forearm, staring straight into her unhinged eyes.
“You will never touch my daughter again,” I growled into her face.
Suddenly, the front door of the house crashed open with a loud, violent bang.
“David! Where are you?!” my sister Hannah’s voice echoed down the hallway, followed by the heavy, hurried footsteps of my father and two uniformed police officers.
Meredith’s eyes widened in sheer panic.
Hannah had never trusted Meredith. After leaving the dinner table, my sister had felt so uneasy about Lily’s reaction that she called my father, pulled up the property records Meredith had claimed to own in Chicago, and discovered three different fraud warrants under Meredith’s maiden name. They had rushed back to my house with the authorities just in time.
The police officers burst into the office, their firearms drawn. “Police! Don't move! Hands where we can see them!”

I released Meredith and stepped back. She collapsed onto the floor, instantly transforming her voice into a frantic scream. “Help me! Please! He’s crazy! He tried to attack me!”
I didn't say a word. I simply pointed at the laptop screen, where the video of Meredith shoving my four-year-old daughter into the dark closet was still playing on an infinite loop.
