Chapter 2 - The Ring on the Steel Counter

The Velvet Lounge was closed on Mondays, but when Nora unlocked the front door at precisely noon, the brass bell didn't even have time to chime before she saw him.
Dante was sitting in the corner booth where the shadow of the velvet curtains cut him off from the street. He wasn't drinking coffee. He had a small, velvet-lined leather box resting on the Formica table between his hands. The two bodyguards from the other night were stationed outside the frosted glass windows, their dark silhouettes blurring behind the water streaks.
Nora walked over slowly, her apron clean, her hands tightly folded in front of her. She didn't sit down.
"You're punctual," Dante said, looking up. His stormy gray eyes seemed sharper today, cutting through the dim interior light with an intensity that made her breath hitch.
"I have rent due and a baby who doesn't care about your schedule," Nora replied, her voice steadying. She rested both hands on the edge of the table. "I have conditions. If we're doing this, if I'm trading my life and my anonymity to step into your world, we lay down the rules right now."
Dante raised an eyebrow, a faint, humorless ghost of a smile touching the corner of his chiseled mouth. "Conditions. From a woman who lives on three hundred dollars and a prayer."
"Don't patronize me, Dante," she snapped, dropping his title entirely. The audacity of it seemed to hang in the air between them. For a fraction of a second, the heavy bodyguard outside stiffened, but Dante raised a single finger, halting any movement. "You want a wife to legitimize a household you shouldn't even have, and you want a mother for a child you have no biological right to claim. That means you need me more than I need your protection. So listen carefully."
She leaned forward, her eyes locked on his.
"One: I stay in school. My online accounting classes finish in December. You don't touch my schedule. Two: My name stays on every medical document. No aliases, no hiding my chart behind syndicate doctors. Three: When the baby is born, it is our secret, but to the world, this is a real marriage. I won't be treated like a ghost in your mansion."
She stopped, her chest rising and falling beneath her woolen sweater. She had expected him to laugh, to dismiss her, or to threaten her with the terrifying power he held over the entire East Coast.
Instead, Dante closed the velvet box with a soft snap, stood up to his full, towering height, and looked down at her with a gaze so complex it made her stomach turn.
"Done," he said softly.

Before she could process his quick surrender, he opened the box again, lifted a heavy platinum band encrusted with three small, flawless diamonds, and took her left hand before she could pull away. His skin was warm, calloused, and impossibly strong. He slid the ring onto her finger. It fit with terrifying perfection.
"We sign the paperwork tonight at my attorney's office," Dante said, his voice dropping an octave as his thumb brushed briefly over her knuckles. "And Nora? Welcome home."
