Chapter 3: The Daughter They Buried

The ballroom faded away.

Only one word remained.

Marion.

Alive.

After twenty-three years.

Hélène felt tears threatening to break through decades of self-control.

"Where is she?" she asked.

The waitress hesitated.

Then looked directly at Armand.

Fear crossed her face.

That was all the answer Hélène needed.

Armand wasn't merely connected to Marion.

He was connected to her disappearance.

Suddenly, the young woman reached into her apron pocket.

She pulled out an old photograph.

Its edges were worn.

Its colors faded.

But Hélène recognized the woman immediately.

Marion.

Older.

Tired.

Yet unmistakably Marion.

On the back was a handwritten message:

"If anything happens to me, find Hélène."

The room spun.

"What happened to my daughter?"

The waitress swallowed hard.

"My mother said powerful people destroyed her life."

Armand stepped forward.

"That's enough."

But nobody was listening anymore.

Not even the guests.

Whispers spread through the ballroom.

Questions followed.

Then accusations.

The perfect image Armand had spent decades building began cracking before everyone's eyes.

And for the first time, he looked cornered.

Truly cornered.

The waitress clutched the necklace.

"My mother always said one day the truth would come out."

Hélène stared at Armand.

Then at the photograph.

Then at the young woman who might be her granddaughter.

Because there was one final question nobody had answered.

If Marion was alive all these years...

Why had she been hiding?

And what terrible secret was she still afraid to reveal?
