Chapter 5 - The Emergency Room Showdown

The private room in the ICU of Oakhaven Memorial Hospital was quiet, save for the rhythmic, simulated beep of my heart monitor.

Thanks to Dr. Lucas Reed—a trusted friend of mine who ran the cardiology department—my "condition" was listed as critical but stable. I was officially in a medically induced coma, completely unresponsive to external stimuli.

By 6:00 PM, the storm outside had returned, rain lashing against the double-pane windows of the third-floor suite.

The door to my room opened quietly.

I kept my eyes closed, my breathing slow and mechanical. I heard the soft rustle of silk and the sharp click of heels. It was Eleanor. But she wasn't alone.

"Is he completely under, Aris?" Eleanor’s voice asked, her tone cold and businesslike.

"Yes," a male voice replied. It was Dr. Aris Thorne. "The medical staff has him on a heavy sedative drip to manage his cerebral pressure. He won't wake up, Eleanor. Not until we decide."

"Good," Eleanor said. I heard her walk to the side of my bed, her presence radiating a chilling coldness. "The estate attorneys are waiting in the private lounge downstairs. I’ve brought the final power of attorney documents. Once I sign as his legal conservator due to medical incapacitation, the asset transfers will go through. The lake house, the offshore trusts, the commercial holdings... all of it will be under my sole control."

"And what about the girl?" Thorne asked. "Harper. She’s been looking at me sideways since the wedding."

"Harper will do exactly what she’s told," Eleanor sneered. "She knows what happens to her father if she speaks. Once the money is cleared and transferred to our Swiss accounts, we’ll discontinue Richard’s life support. It’ll look like a tragic, inevitable system failure. And then, my dear Aris, we can finally leave this miserable city behind."

"It’s a beautiful plan, Eleanor," a voice said from the shadows near the bathroom.

Eleanor and Dr. Thorne spun around, their gasps echoing in the quiet room.

Foster Harris stepped out of the darkness, holding a digital recorder in his hand, its blue recording light glowing steadily.

"Who are you?" Dr. Thorne demanded, his face turning pale. "Get out of this room immediately, or I’ll have security—"

"Security isn't going to help you tonight, Doctor," Foster said calmly, stepping aside.

The glass doors of the ICU suite slid open.

Preston walked in, his face red, tears streaming down his cheeks. He looked at his mother as if seeing a monster for the first time. Behind him was Harper, her hand clutching his arm for support.

"Mom..." Preston choked out, his voice cracking with a devastating grief. "How... how could you do this? To Dad? To Harper? To me?"

May you like

Eleanor’s elegant composure fractured for a fraction of a second, her eyes darting between her son and the recorder in Foster’s hand. "Preston, darling... you don't understand. This man is lying. They’re trying to set me up—"

"No, Eleanor," I said, sitting up in the bed and pulling the fake oxygen mask from my face. "The only person setting a trap tonight was you."
